My wife is my navigator and enjoys figuring out our trips with Microsoft Streets and Trips. That works fine until we get on the road and she finds another route that takes off the plan. I would like to get her a GPS but know squat about all the makes and models. I've looked at Best Buy and seem to think one of the Garmin models for about $300 might be workable. One question that I haven't had answered yet is how is a unit kept up to date as time goes by. I sure don't want to have to replace it every few years.
So, any suggestions as to make or model and features to look for would be most welcome.

I use the 2720......but I believe I'd go with th e 2820 next time...........better waterproofing.............
Maps are all preloaded
We figure route at home, download 'em then they are easily changed at any time....................or just plan a route on the fly.(has a remote for wife on back seat)
Updates for maps and GPS software have all been free so far...............
Just download from Garmins web site....................................................
