At long last some like minded ppl.
I think this is quite a good discussion topic with our modern age of electronic gadgetry. I recently posted a similar discussion on the Ulysses Club forum about recording ones rides, for comment to what ppl used and where they mounted the camera or video. I am more interested in video which I notice no one has really commented on here so far. Bike cameras have been around for a while now(video) but have needed to run wiring to a recording unit that had to be stored somewhere else on the bike. When you see the great footage of race bikes on the track these days I thought why not document any touring ride. Anyway I have found several brands all varying in price but noticed that 'Twenty20 Cameras' are releasing a complete stand alone unit (no wires needed) in December called the 'VholdR'.
On specs it appears quite impressive, Waterproof, rechargable battery, SDcard (2gig = almost 2hrs riding) and dimensions small and unobtrusive with negligable weight. Some Ulysses members here have purchased cheaper variations which runs off AA batteries and noticed that they produce reasonably good footage albeit when bike mounted showed lots of vibration/jarring compared to some that have the unit mounted on the helmet or hold them in the hand(Pillion). Will be interesting to hear anyone else that has done something similar and what they found was good or bad

dmatson, thanks for the info,

The only thing I am not particularly keen about is having to run cables from the camera (off the helmet) to a recording unit stored somewhere else on the bike. Certainly if it is to be bike mounted I daresay it won't be a problem but to me for an additional $70 the vholdr appears the goods to me IMO. I think you will also find that the 520 bullet cameras can be bought somewhat cheaper than $275.
Forgot to ask if your friend has one already how has he/she got it set up on the bike etc ?

My friend put the camera on his helmet and the unit in a tank bag or he put it in his backpack/camelback. He used it on an off-road trip with great results. I think he also had a remote also but I don't remember how that was attached.

Thanks for that, I guess in a way it could be the best of both worlds too if having a camera with av input to use as a vcr then can be used for the touristy stuff when you arent on the bike too then.
