So I'm curious how many of you use the BMW blue stuff or just something off the shelf from the local auto parts store/wal-mart. I know, I may have started something but I haven't had this cycle for a year yet and about month ago I changed all the fluids and the question has sat in my mind.
thanks,

You don't have to use the blue stuff. You do want to use a nitrate free coolant for aluminum engines.

I am using Zerex G-05. It is a phosphate free 5 year antifreeze that is pale blue.
I got it at a large chain store-Auto zone or O' Reillys

No matter what you buy, there is a good chance it was made by them:

This includes some european companies that insist on using only their brand coolant with a particular color. Guess who makes it for them. As long as the specs are there, think of the color as foodcolor.

Is Phospate Free the same as Nitrate Free?
