View Full Version : LT drivers, what's you age, height and weight?

My girlfriend originally worried I was too small to handle my 2005 LT.
The first week of October, we circled the Grand Canyon. We started/finished in L.A. where we live. Total mileage in one week: 1,278. Number of incidents/close calls: 0. However, I did make her get off the bike for low speed U-turns. She now thinks I can handle it fine.
One way I convinced her I could handle it (before we left) is that on Memorial Day weekend, we drove to Laguna (in my car, before I bought the LT), and I showed her an LT parked two spaces away. While we were ogling, the owners walked up to us and started chatting. They were in there seventies and I don't think he was 5'5, and she was about 5'
So, just so I can show her, what is your age, height, weight and inseam. I want to hear from everybody, not just the extremes.
So here's the first contribution:
I'm 50, 5'10" 150lbs. 33" inseam and I'm very thin.
My guess is this question has been asked before. If so, my apologies. Searching on the terms height, weight or age brings up a zillion hits.
Thanks

...losing my grip on my 40's (one year left), muscles are losing their grip on the stomach (tad under 200), I used to be 6 foot, but the spine is probably losing the battle with gravity.
I will ride my LT until I can no longer hold it up ( same as the SO ).

66 years young (in three more weeks), 5' 6 1/2" (used to be 5' 7"), 190 lbs. (gained a pound a year for 50 years :D ). 9000 miles in 14 months on my 2006 LT. If height and weight were more important than balance and slow-speed riding skills, then there isn't anyone big and strong enough to ride a 853 lb (not counting the case contents), high-CG bike like the LT. I weight train and hit the treadmill because I am a bowhunter, but that does absolutely zip for me as a motorcyclist. I need to ride 88 miles RT to work at least twice per week, plus any distance two-up once a week to stay proficient in low speed manuvering.
Assuming you have either taken the basic rider safety MSF course or have ridden for a few years, take the MSF Experienced Rider Course, the NJ version of which you can read about at <http://www.renj.com/courses.htm#advanced>. Get sharp and stay sharp. Ride safely.

Been riding since I was 17. As you may have noticed in my signature, the last 4 years are on a ZX-12R (Kawasaki Ninja 1200). Got the LT in July of this year.
I take a minimum of one class per year. If I can't find anything else I like, I take the BRC again. Done it twice and I've paid for a 3rd time. I've also taken the advanced course and Lee Parks course (quite excellent). I'm trying to find time to go to Keith Codes superbike school.
I own a dozen books on riding safely and read them week to week.
Lastly, I practice every minute I'm on any bike. Here's a trick: I loaded the CD version of "A Twist Of The Wrist II" into my iPod and I drive around listening to Keith Code giving me tips. It works great.
In my opinion, the ZX-12R has more of a chance of killing me than the LT. I can't split lanes on the LT (I'm terrorfied when I try it) and zero to 60 on the ZX happens in 2.5 seconds. But I've never dropped the Ninja!
So thanks for the tips, info, etc., and keep it coming.

I too have been riding since the tender age of almost 14, and I lane split with the LT (old Parisian habits just won't quit).
It took me almost a year to feel comfortable to lane split 2-up on the LT. I am on my 5th year riding LTs (This is my 3rd). Only dropped my 1st LT once, never since.

I also have my wife get off for slow U-turns and any other low-speed maneuvers I feel I could do better alone. We also use signals when it's okay for her to get on and off, and when she does get on, when she's ready for me to roll. Bottom line: when stopped, there are no unexpected movements.

Thought your request was curious. Bought my '05 K/LT from a guy 5 years younger than my 64 clicks 6' 210 lbs. His excuse was he was getting too old.
Here's my take. Age and physical issues can be a mind set. Just had a hip replaced and was worried about riding. (Panhead/Knucklehead etc. parked since the BMW touring took over.) Doc said give it time to really heal and given some minor restrictions should be ok.
5000 miles later, and adjusting to the hip healing issues all is well. I want to ride and work at keeping mind, body and adjustment issues in tune and focus.
My only issue about the K/LT is that it is very heavy and most definitly takes some "practice" to get used to it. Protocol for riding - just be safe than sorry. There is nothing wrong with driving around the block to set up for a landing or turn. (dropping the K/LT makes for much embarrassment when you have to solicit 15 bystanders to lift it up.) Taking off - same protocols apply. It's like flying an airplane - there are check lists and things to do before lift off or landing.
Ultimately - Hannigan has the solution - a trike. Now before you beat up on the issue, look closely at a BMW conversion. VERY WELL DONE technically and finish. SO there is another level to aspire to that will allow riding for many more years. Lovin it... ;)

Now that we're back from the trip, she is a believer (in me, which she usually is :D :D ).
Got to say, we were two up and I calculated the load (her/me/luggage) to be about 375lbs (a conservative estimate-high, that is). Now that I ride it (almost said "her") without the SO and luggage, it feels like my ZX-12R - bulky, a bit heavy, but quite manageable and nimble once under way.
I always kept the option open of selling the bike after the trip if I didn't like it, and now I find myself daydreaming about riding it when I'm not.

56 yrs, 5,11", 190 lbs, 32" inseam. Wouldn't want the seat any higher but can manage it quite nicely, just don't give it too much of an angle when stopped. It's a good idea to put the side stand down when the SO is getting on & off so if the weight shifts unexpectedly, the bike stays upright.
Great bike, absolutely the smoothest ride on 2 wheels!

5'9"; 30" inseam; short seat; perfect fit, but windshield top edge, when down, interferes with downstream vision. Will work that out.
200 lbs.; good shape; alert; considerate; safe. But no shrinking violet.
Some of my family and friends think I have lost it, but most of them admit (privately) that they admire the "leap."
That said, I don't need anybody's approval but mine, and I love it.

Additional notes (from an earlier post elsewhere on this site):
The 2006 LT is one really high CG bike, requiring a lot of strength and leverage (rider height) to control it when someone is getting on the rear. I don't have it, apparently. My wife and I used to mount a 535 lb Shadow 1100 in the conventional manner, no problem, however the LT has a higher CG, and we have a lower CG than we used to. :D The only way we can mount the LT is on the centerstand, her first onto the front pegs, then the rear pegs, then onto the rear seat. After I get on, we do a coordinated "bobsled" like manuver to come off the centerstand. :histerica It helps to remember to turn the ignition on (no brake assist, otherwise). Dismounting, she can either slide off as I put it onto the sidestand, or do a reversal of the centerstand method. Of course, centerstand use is no good if you are going off-pavement, but we are past the camping phase of our lives.

I am guessing the previous owner lowered the bike since I can touch the ground very easy with my whole foot sitting normal on the bike.

We've only had the LT for a few days, but the this IS, the most awesome bike I've ever been on. Been riding since 1974, but I quit 18 yrs ago. This is her first ride.
We love it!
51, going on 94. Just did a cremation contract, didn't think I would live this long.
Every ride now is bliss to me.
188lbs, 6', 29" inseam, BMW low seat, fits like a glove! Flat footed and then some. Way easier to ride than the R1100RT I just traded for this 99 LT.
SO is 5'5", 150lbs, fits her well too. She got the heated seat and back rest.
The previous owner was about 5'10", 155 lbs, 70 something and rode 500 miles a week to work.

I am 5' 10" 32" inseam, 185 lbs, age 61My girlfriend originally worried I was too small to handle my 2005 LT.
Thanks

Geeezzz I feel like a fat A#s. 5'10" 240 31"inseam. I was also worried in the beginning. It's all second nature now. It handles like an Albatross 0-2 mph, but agile as a cutting horse >3mph. We ride 80%+ 2up too. On long runs the bike is difficult for me at the slow speed. But we just love to ride.
Thinking about going to Canada summer of 2008, might even consider pulling a trailer. But I'm not sure which trailer to get.

Riding 2 up is not a problem. Stopping 2 up is not a problem. It is those almost stops with feet down and taking off just before the complete stop that causes one to do the duck walk. Being able to keep the bike right side up for over a year now with about 6500 miles on it.

Here's my 2 cents...
Height / weight are not that critical. Once moving more than 3 mph, the LT is not a significant problem to handle. The issue tends to be inseam.
I am 5'8", but very "long waisted" with an inseam of only 28 1/2". Since I rode a 1983 Yamaha Venture Royale for 12 years prior to my first LT in 2002, and that bike was also relatively tall, and plenty heavy, I found the LT to be no trouble at all. I now have 75k miles experience on 2 different LT's (my original 99, traded in 11/03 on a 2003) and have not had an issue to date. Granted, at low speeds, with a heavy passenger, you need to be careful, but truth be known, even if you were a professional weight lifter, if you allow the LT to tip too far to the side, you are going to hurt yourself if you try to keep it from going down.

Thanks
I`m 5`9,185 lbs,31 in inseam,2007LT,have not dropped it yet,a handfull in close quarters,a dream once you are moving,RFERNA12

started again in 2003 had a vx800, volusia, goldwing, venture and now a 2003 LT.
The LT is the nicest bike so far but also the highest seat and center of gravity and about as heavy as the wing.
Best tourer for short folks is the second generation 86 Venture
Wife said I'll kill myself and I said I'll die happy. Her reply was don't come back a veggie that I have to nurse.

LT is top heavy but not a much so as Connie with a full tank of gas. So why is it that I've never dropped Connie but did the LT after 9 months? Maybe the real weight difference of Approx. 250 lbs. Connie easier to muscle from a near tip. That said, LT is sweetest ride I've ever been on.
