Vonda and I plan to travel down to the Grand Canyon when we leave Midway Saturday morning. If anyone familiar with the area wants to send some advice/suggestion on a good route and/or hotel, let me know. Is UT 89 a primary state road, i.e what should we expect traveling south after leaving Midway?

You would want to take 189 down Provo Canyon to I-15. Take I-15 to Spanish Fork and pickup 89. Take 89 to the North Rim. I like the North Rim better. Less crowded. 89 is a good road to take if you are not in a hurry. If you want to stay part way I would stay in Panguitch (Beehive Beemers hold their annual rally there) or Kanab. Many westerns were filmed near there. Either way you have easy access to Bryce Canyon and/or Zion Canyon.

Thanks for the suggestion. 10-4 on less crowds since it will be Labor Day weekend. How far is Panguitch from Flagstaff? I'm guesstimating that it will be a full day's ride from Midway to Flagstaff, so a good hotel part way would work nicely. Thanks again.

Hey Doug I know nothing about the routes you're taking, but I'd like to make a suggestion. I would think about buying a National Parks and Lands Pass (http://store.usgs.gov/pass/) for $80. It is good for a year and it will keep you from having to pay for each National Park you enter, that has a fee, and it is good for a year. I've had one since CCR Grand Teton and it sure made things easier.

Panguitch is 230 miles from Zermatt. There is good access to Bryce Canyon from there. Flagstaff is another 270 miles. Steve's suggestion about the Parks Pass is a good one. You could spend a lot of money visiting National Parks/Monuments in this area. The pass is a good investment.

I rode my K75S trough Zion. It was incredibly beautiful. I had driven through it once before my bike trip on my way home from a fugitive hunting trip in St George Utah.
I knew I had to go back. What a beautiful ride ! In fact, I think I will start planning a ride there with the wifey next year.
here's a link with some maps and info.

This place http://www.grandcanyonnorthrim.com/ is pretty incredible and would make a good destination for the day. I would at least include a drive thru Zion(one of my wifes fav.) It is a pretty good days ride from North Rim to the South or Flagstaff. The miles can be deceiving ;)

I've got 2 days reserved at the North Rim on the way into Midway. Really looking forward to seeing the sights! Trying to figure out how much we'll be able to see, so many roads so little time......
