Good article. Well used sarcasim. :D
Everytime I see someone not using a turn signal, 99% of the time, they are on the cell phone and couldn't be bothered to drive with their left hand which would allow them to use the signal... because it's not like anyone drives a manual transmission anymore and needs their right hand for anything. Then again, they would need to switch hands after backing out, since you need to select gears with your right hand... and there lies hte problem. What we need, is the turnsignal stalk on het right side, so drivesr can use their laft hand ot talk on their phone. Problem solved! Gee I should join NASA or something.

Jeff if it wasn't so true this would belong in the "Humor" section.
In Louisiana after Katrina people are totaly distracted. The only thing is Katrina happened more than two years ago. I am talking about the little town of Hammond where I live. I have had a multitude of near misses since then, I thought about parking my bike for awhile. What is most amazing is it hasn't changed back to the old way yet. I went to meet some other riders about 2.5 miles from my house and had four different near misses in that 2.5 miles, my favorite was at a church a woman looking for a parking spot made a left turn from the right lane right in front of me, I am glad I was paying attention. My fovorite action is people stopping for an imaginary stop sign! the next incident happened three bolcks later when a driver stopped at an intersection with no stop needed. I almost went back home, I thought someone was sending me a message to stay home, but the rest of the day was uneventful.

Actually, I think the car companies can save some bucks by not even putting the turn signals in cars. Nobody uses them anyway, other than to hang rubber bands on.
And while they're at it, they could make the gas pedal the same size as the brake since most people can't seem to tell the difference between the 2.

I have to confess this is a thread that I could go on and on and on.....
Here is one from my recent trip down to Missouri.
Here we were on the slab headed South and in the left lane passing us(Which was hard to believe anyway!!) was a lady driving with her knees and typing on her laptop!! We need handsfree laws for cell phones, etc., etc....

Excellent use of sarcasm. Very, very true sadly.
Thanks for the article.

Jeff, this is a great article. I just forwarded onto the afternoon talk show DJ, who's always talking about the idiot multitasking drivers. Hope he reads it this afternoon.

I'm riding close to home last night and after the light goes from red to green, the car in-front of me proceeds through the light and without signaling ( I don't know how you signal that you're suddenly stopping for no reason) drives several hundred feet and then just stops! She is in the "fast" lane and just stops! I'll never understand........ and this is not the first time. seems to be happening a lot lately..

A long time ago, I learned that I was one of a handful of drivers (out of 150) who use turn signals. Why don't they use turn signals? The common response was, "If I signal, then the other person will try to cut me off."

Yes, turn signals don't work so well in So Kal. It's kind of like asking for the lane instead of just taking it.
But, I do wish the multi-taskers would stay off the sidewalks, however! The last guy driving on the sidewalk, in Santa Monica, killed 10 people! Next thing you know, there will be a 10 day waiting period on those EVIL assault vehicles.

I quit using turn signals because my feet get hung up in the levers when I try to change Hi-low beam...
(Surely I'm not the only one old enough to remember the "old" way of changing the headlight beam)

A few of us on this site might even remember when the turn signal requirement came into effect in the 50's. Spent many Saturdays, working part time, at the local gas station, installing double filament bulbs and the control lever, with the little rubber wheel that rubbed on the bottom of the steering wheel to make the signal cancel, when you made your turn.
At that time folks did not make hand signals all the time, flashing lights, was the solution. What's next?

I was headed to the mall with my 14 y.o. son today, we were in the right lane getting ready to turn into the parking lot, until . . .
I noticed a shiny new Lexus, with a pretty young lady driving it, while she was talking on the cell phone, drinking her Starbucks' coffee, fixing her make-up in the rear view mirror, and turning into the space that I was occupying without so much as a look. All understandable, of course. She had to look her best before she got to the mall.
I hit the LT's horn and the Lexus swerved left rather suddenly, the coffee cup disappeared, and who knows where the eyelash mascara brush ended up! Guido told me that she probably crapped her pants as well.
Did I mention that I was already out of her way before hitting the horn? :histerica

I remember I had a rolling gasoline bomb (70 Maverick) with the switch on the floor.

Hey Tony, Guido also said that all the mascara and makeup was a waste of time!
