View Full Version : How do I hook up a set of ear speakers to the bike?

Been told by the Radio Shack guy that I cannot tap into the rear speakers, even using resistors, etc. He said it will damage the radio.

I've a 2005 K1200LT - can anyone help me with some good advice?

Thanks.

Finally a post that I can contribute to... I took my bike to a car stereo shop and had them tap into the rear speakers and then disconnect them. They used a line-level adaptor and wired it to a 3.5 plug. I just fade the radio to the rear and plug up my custom earplugs. Any decent car stereo shop should be able to do it. I'm sure others who are more do-it-yourselfers will chime in.

He obviously didn't hear your question correctly due to his medical condition= a cranial rectal obstruction.

Most of us with aftermarket intercoms have used that method of "sound source access" without any ill effects.
You should graft a ground loop filter to deal with the alternator and ABS interference

I dunno, Ed, you've got more nicknames for your LT than most of us have bikes. :)

and it's really quite simple to do.

Ed - I had the bike torn down to what your's looked like just looking for the speakers! Just kidding...

However, in a previous reply on the board I was given a diagram which showed installing a capacitor and resistors and still the Radio Shack (expert??) said it would backfeed into the radio and damage it.

I do not have the comm system on the bike and really don't care to add it.

Remember...most likely the guy at Radio Shack was the same guy that asked you if you wanted to "Supersize" that order last week.

All you need is a $30 line level converter like this one:

And a $4.00 plug like this one:

Hi Keith - thanks for the info, just a question though. Do you know if this equipment is applicable to the 05 LT? I'm totally ignorant when it comes to electronics.

I doesn't matter what year LT you have since you are basically splicing into the speaker wires.
SeaMarshal, if you fill out your profile there may be someone in your area who has done it or is willing to help. I did and within a week someone was at my house helping me identify the correct wires (Thanks again Steve).

Now Hear this sells a nice littple plug in for the LT that plugs into the front or rear intercom, and then gives ou the intercom plug and a earbud plug. the speakers automatically cut out if the ear bud is plugged in. it is about $40.

Her main thing is making molded earplugs, which I love. I use them on the bike, and on airplanes and everything. ( attach them to an Entymonics set.

Anyway, could not be happier.
