V1 in the top case

Has anyone had experience with placing their V1 in the topcase? it seems like a perfect palce to put it outside of the dash. I know you lose laser but being a common rider to Ohio I can tell..you jsut don't stand a chance against it.

There is power there already and the remote can be run to the front.

Thoughts? experiences?

I had mine in the right saddlebag. As far as I was able to tell the only thing I lost was of course the laser, and VERY LITTLE warning in terms of radar
but if you have an external display unit (as I had mounted on the dashboard) you never have to take it off again.

Andy. . . I have the remote unit and the remote audio unit. Do you have any images of how you have it mounted in the side case? Sounds like an interesting project.

Sorry, no pics, but it was very simple. *I* put the remote audio unit into the oddments box, and the remote display into to top center of the dash. That way the remote display unit doesn't get into the way of anything, and it doesn't get wet Please note: The remote display unit is NOT watertight and needs to be protected. I found the the dash seems to be enough protection, especially if you have a shelf.

Now as for the V1 in the saddlebag: That is also quite simple. put some high quality velcro on it and stick it to the saddlebag (I had it on the lid, so that is was as far out as possible when the lid was closed. drill a small hole to feed cables into the saddlebag and you are good to go. What I did finally to make sure the cables stay in one place was to cover the cable in hot glue. That way they stay out of the way, arte protected from every day in and out of the saddlebag, and if needed the hot glue can be removed.

I tried several locations, and found by rather intense testing that It does not work well anywhere except out in the open with a clear view forward and back. In the side cases, it will pick up radar to the front fairly well to the side it is mounted on, but it is blind to radar to the side opposite. (Rear detection was good if not mounted behind the chrome trim strip). I tried the topcase, and if mounted to one side it is blinded to the front by the speaker grills. If mounted in the center of the top case, it is blinded by the rider. Radar cannot see through YOU.

I did a lot of testing using a Ka band door opener signal in a mall parking lot. Tried the detector in every available spot on the bike. I found a spot in the parking lot that just got the signal to full strength on the V1. I could lean over in front if it and reduce the signal to 1-2 dots. I finally ended up mounting it in a Pelican box mounted to the right side wind wing by the windshield. It had great reception both front and rear, but if the radar was to the rear left, I blocked it. That is the direction that is least likely to be a problem though.

Basically, if ANYTHING other than plastic is between the radar and the V1, including you, it will not receive it well at all. Plastic is OK only if not painted with a metallic paint.
