I just got my "pre-enjoyed" LT on Labor Day and took my first 1000 mile trip from Upstate NY to Virginia over this past weekend. I took some basic tools in one of the bags, a camera, and a small overnight bag. The bike ran flawlessly with zero problems. Now after reading the forums for a while, I think I made need to start towing a trailer on my trips!!! Sounds like I need spare shift linkage, a spare final drive, fuses, an electrical meter, and a Craftsman 1800 piece tool set!!!

Sounds like some time in the future I may have some work to do. But Man, do I love this bike!!!

don't get caught up in it. just lube your shift linkage or get an aftermarket one from on here. Just ride. It's only natural to break. If you do break post it here and you will have help in no time. I would go out of my way if someone was broke anywhere in Ohio/Penn to help them out with what I could and there is many others on here to do the same. Carry a few tools and do your maint. and hope for the best. And drill your weep hole.

What year is your LT? Regarding FD, check your build date (found under seat) - anything after May 2002 has very, very low chance of failing.

I really like this site but we would all probably be happier with our bikes if we didn't read it.

I have never had any problems with my 2000 LT in the 56k that I have owned it. I have a friend with an 2002 LT that has more miles than me including a trip to Alaska that doesn't know anything about final drives, shift linkages or top box latch issues. He just rides merrily along.

Things always sound worse on the Internet, don't let it bother you. Doesn't the fact you just took a 1000 mile trip that was fun with no problems tell you more than a bunch of worry-warts on an Internet forum? Have some people experienced problems, yes (including me, but on my 3rd LT even after the 1st one had a final drive failure, that should tell you something). Does that stop me from riding my bike, or make me carry a Sears store worth of tools and supplies, absolutely not. I own the bike to ride it, not worry about all the "what-ifs" in the world.

The point is to enjoy the ride, so do that! It's a machine that has moving parts, so things will break. No vehicle is immune to this; when was the last time you saw a Toyota or Honda (arguably the most reliable cars in the world) service department that was empty?
