I have been thinking about getting a used BMW next year probably a LT but I would be interested to know when the rear drive problem started?

Did it start with like the R & K 1100’s or was it before that?

When did they start making bikes with ABS?

Thanks

The rear drives on K bikes prior to 99 (when the K1200LT first came out) were a different design. Don't know if the older design exhibited this problem.

BMW has shipped some bikes with since the late 80s or early 90s. All K1200LTs have it, regardless of year.

Oh, another thing Big Al started :histerica

For my first one I would like one old enough I can buy parts cheap as I do most of my own wrench turning. I am after comfort and a LD ride. :)

Thanks

The FD failures hysteria started with the internet..................I've had 2 1/2 FD failures on two LTs (two bearings and one seal), so I don't see it as hysteria at all. Neither does Rob Nye from what I can gather. :)

Yes, the 'net can blow things out of proportion. But when companies deny real, documentable problems and try to blow off customers while touting their leading-edge designs of the highest quality then there really is a problem.

Note that I'm putting most of the blame on the BMW factory, as at least in my cases BMW UK and BMW NA have stood behind the failures as have my local dealerships. Others haven't been as lucky, especially if they weren't as well informed.

Forums like this are just another tool for consumers to have on their side. Yes, you need to separate fact from inflated fiction, but in this case the FD failures are well documented as are BMW AG's pathetic and random responses.

Thanks for your experiences Ken, if I should be able to get a great deal on a newer one I would go ahead and get a extra fd just in case, with my luck if I had a spare it would always be in my way and never have to use it. To have such problems :)

Maybe I could be like the Cowboys were tonight, sort of like stepping in a bucket of something and coming out smelling like roses??? :D
