The information is correct. Aircraft, especially large turbine equipment, is very prone to bird stikes near airports most anywhere. The major problem is ingestion of the bird(s) through the engine intake which can cause major damage to parts. Newer engines are designed to take the hits, but older designs can throw blades causing very severe engine damage. This causes some exciting moments in the cockpit  . Dont ask how I know this. "E" ticket ride for certain.

Back in the '60s, when I attended Aviation High School in New York City, we were shown films from aircraft engine companies that were developing ways to prevent ingested objects from destroying jet engines. They showed slow motion films of dead chickens being shot into the intake and the results. The engine would start to vibrate a little and then it just got worse and worse until it exploded.

Scary stuff!!

THIS (http://www.birdstrike.org/meetings/2006_papers/Jinings%20White%20Starlings%20Canopy.pdf) presentation is really disturbing. I fly out of CLE multiple times each month. Starlings are very small but they swarm!
