There was a Harley Rally just south of where I live in Iowa this weekend. Lots of bikes and that was nice. But I noticed a behavior that was interesting. Most HD riders will wave back if you wave IF they are alone or with maybe one or two other bikes. However, if they are in a large group and you wave, NONE of them will return the gesture. Guess it's not considered cool enough to wave. So, I tried giving the large groups the finger. THAT they seem to respond to. But by the time they get turned around and clean up the carnage of running into each other, I'm long gone. :histerica
Just kidding about the finger thing. Still, it does present and interesting visual image.

Was that rally in Keosaqua? or near there? I rode through there on Sunday and it must have already ended. I only saw a handful of Harleys. They all waved back. Beautiful day! Had a picnic at the state park there.

If I'm on the road and see another bike (any make, doesn't matter to me) I'll give a wave. At large rallys, the wave tends to go away, because there are just so many bikes on the road, your arm would get tired waving to them all.

You're not being snubbed, it's just a matter of enough is enough.

As a Road Captain leading a large group I tried to discourage waving back at bikes, because the wave might get misconstrued as some hand signal and the wrong thing gets passed the rest of the way down the line. Not being rude, just making sure I bring the whole group in at the end of the day.

My wife and I were able to spend a couple of hours on the Blue Ridge Parkway Saturday afternoon. Lots of bikes around; mostly Harleys but I counted seven or eight BMWs. Given BMW's relative market share that's a good showing.

Some Harley riders would return my wave, some would not. I wave at all motorcyclists and don't let it bother me if they don't respond.

On Sunday I took a short trip across town and saw something interesting. I was tooling along in the middle lane at about the speed limit. Three cruiser riders with really loud pipes passed me in the left lane, then slowed to turn left into a local biker bar. I've noticed that some cruiser riders use hand signals, even though their bikes are equipped with mechanical signals. Anyway, the lead rider extended his left arm to signal the left turn. Instead of an open hand, though, he extended his middle finger. Not sure who he was "talking to" or what his point was. I rode past shaking my head, thinking of the negative impression that was being made on all the motorists.

So I concluded that no wave is better than types of wave.

The only bike specific rider that has NEVER waved back to me are the ten or so LT riders in the past two years in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and this is when I am on my LT.

Why is this? I either appear threatening or too geeky to acknowledge.

Signed: pouty LT waver.

Signed: pouty LT waver. It's because you aren't doing the LT wave.

If I were in a big group, I probably wouldn't wave either - too busy keeping an eye on the idiots in the big group.

I wave no matter what...

I wish more riders could multi-task.
There sure would be a lot less accidents...

By multi-tasking, I mean:
Wave
Use turn signals
Lean
Roll the throttle back to actually get up to 55.

Intersting point. I had not thought of that. Thanks.

When I was first talking about trading the Harley for the RT, my nephew complained that, "Those Beemer riders never wave. They must be snobs." So when I got the RT I told him, "Sorry but I can't wave to or be seen with a Harley. It's in the purchase agreement."
