What is the general consensus on the best way to break in a boxer motor ? I have heard conflicting opinions. Some say to keep the RPMs low and vary the speed, and others say to vary the speed, but get the rpms way up on a few occasions. I'm picking up my new '07 on Thursday and I'd like to break it in correctly.

Thanks, Roy

Ride it like you stoled it but just don't do any long steady high rpm stuff. Vary your speeds on the highway and play on the back roads as much as possible during the first 1000 miles.

Like above. Don't lug it (keep revs over 2500 or 3000 in higher gears) and don't redline it, keep them under 7000. Vary your speed and change gears often. Downshift to a lower gear and use as much compression braking as possible. Don't ride short trips under 10 miles if possible, and on longer rides, stop every hour or so and let the engine cool down for at least 30 minutes to get some heat cycling into it.

I followed these procedures with my 2006 R1200GS Adventure and she runs like a stripped ass ape and has yet to use any oil.

Read it all, good info here.

My Dealer told me the same thing run the hell out of it keeping an eye on the oil and DO NOT LUG the motor. Back roads a big yes! Lugging the motor big big NO NO. and no synthetic oil for a minimum of 6000 miles. My advice run it theses motors are a blast.

Run it like you are going to when it is fully broken in. Do not lug or unduly strain it.
Test the rev limiter but only after it is fully warmed up.
Most of all, enjoy it..

Agree with all the above, especially don't open the throttle or let the engine labour at low revs (under 2500-3000). In town and 30-35 mph 2nd gear is goodness. I kept mine below 6000 rpm for the first 600, and I have since found out that 6000 rpm in 6th gear is 100+mph and you wouldn't be going that fast would you? ;) Mine used about a quart of oil in the first 4000 miles but consumption is now almost nil, and 7500 rpm in 6th gear is REALLY exhilarating!
