My cruise does not work and I took the cruise through the checklist steps and it fails on step 3. I have a 1999LT. Is this checklist below accurate for the 1999 model? I can follow the steps but I don't know what the bike is telling me by failing step #3

Follow in exact order
1. With the ignition switch OFF, switch on the cruise control switch.
2. Press and hold the set button to the SET position and switch ON the ignition switch. (LIGHT ON )
3. RELEASE the set button (LIGHT OFF ) :(
4.Move to RESET position. (LIGHT ON )
5. RELEASE the set button (LIGHT OFF)
6. Switch OFF the cruise control switch. (LIGHT ON )
7. Switch the cruise control switch back ON. (LIGHT OFF )
8. Close throttle (LIGHT ON)
9. Release throttle. (LIGHT OFF )
10. Pull clutch lever (LIGHT ON ).
11. Release clutch lever. (LIGHT OFF )
12. Pull front brake lever (LIGHT ON ).
13. Release Lever (LIGHT OFF )
14. Push foot brake pedal (LIGHT ON ).
15. Hold for 5 seconds (LIGHT OFF ).
16. Release foot brake pedal (LIGHT ON ).
17. Rotate rear wheel. (LIGHT goes OFF and ON as wheel turns.)
18.Switch off ignition.

I cannot get the set light off until I turn the bike off and on.

Does anyone know what this is telling me?

I accidentaly posted a previous thread on the classifieds sorry about that. I was in a hurry since I had just dissassembled my control switch. I thought it might be a faulty set switch but since the light turns on when I hit the set switch it shouldn't be that.

Which switch are you talking about? The main on/off and set/resume switch on the left handle bar module? I was told and am under the impression that this module can not be opened without cutting the module housing open. I believe my cruise problems are being caused by a bad set/resume switch and am looking to get a new module to replace the one I have just to get an operable cruise control.

See my response (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=224700&postcount=5) in the other thread.

I believe my switch is physically bad not just electrically bad. If that makes any sense. It occasionally works (and when the system does work it works flawlessly) but the majority of the time I cannot push the set toggle far enough to engage the system. It's as if there's a physical hindrence working against the switch. My mechanic at BMW GR says that the switch can go bad due to a ball/pivot mechanism in the switch. Once that happens the whole module has to be replaced due to the lack of access to the switch itself. Cost for a new module is $195 (IIRC). Beemerboneyard had a used one for $100 or there abouts. Sadly at this time, the loss of cruise is not worth $100 to me.

I just took it apart, you can do it if you are slow and methodical. The only real catch is removing the little star screw thats hidden behind the label that holds the cover to the switches. You also have to undo the handle bar cover and snip and eventually replace two zip ties. It doesn't show this screw in the manual diagram I guess they don't want you taking this apart?

I think it would be easy to diagnose and fix it if it was a physical switch problem.

Thanks, Ian,

I'll take another look at it.
