I have a 1999 Lt and the cruise will not work. I followed the diagnosis procedure and I only get to step 2. when I release the set button on step 3 the light remains on and I am unable to turn the light off without turning the ignition off and then on.
Does anyone have the diagnosis sheet that can tell me what this means? Is this diagnosis pertinent for the 1999 LT?
Follow in exact order
1. With the ignition switch OFF, switch on the cruise control switch.
2. Press and hold the set button to the SET position and switch ON the ignition switch. (LIGHT ON )
3. RELEASE the set button (LIGHT OFF ) :(
4.Move to RESET position. (LIGHT ON )
5. RELEASE the set button (LIGHT OFF)
6. Switch OFF the cruise control switch. (LIGHT ON )
7. Switch the cruise control switch back ON. (LIGHT OFF )
8. Close throttle (LIGHT ON)
9. Release throttle. (LIGHT OFF )
10. Pull clutch lever (LIGHT ON ).
11. Release clutch lever. (LIGHT OFF )
12. Pull front brake lever (LIGHT ON ).
13. Release Lever (LIGHT OFF )
14. Push foot brake pedal (LIGHT ON ).
15. Hold for 5 seconds (LIGHT OFF ).
16. Release foot brake pedal (LIGHT ON ).
17. Rotate rear wheel. (LIGHT goes OFF and ON as wheel turns.) 18.
Switch off ignition.
This is the only thing on my LT that doesn't work. I love this bike and would like to have the cruise working. :)

Try spraying some contact cleaner into the switch.
I've found that 1/2 the bikes I've messed with that had inop cruise control had the clutch microswitch out of adjustment. Remove the bottom plate under the switch housing, find a very small screw that holds the microswitch, loosen it and move the microswitch till you just hear it click when you pull in the clutch. Button back up.

I had the same problem with our 1999 K1200lt. Finally found that the speed sensor was the problem. New speed sensor and it worked fine over the last 11K miles driven.

I have to say I am impressed with the BMW components. When you look inside the switch housing everything is well designed and durable.
The problem I have is that the steps are designed to give you the sollution to the failure. But I don't the key to the step 3 failure? It could be a speed sensor since I just replaced my front ABS sensor and had the ABS reset. Perhaps I need the Cruise reset?
I don't mind replacing components but due to the price I have to know they are the real problem. I looked at all the switches in the housing and they look fine. They are very liquid proof and are sealed from the bottom in resin. The tops appear to be liquid proof. They are the best switches I have ever seen on a motorcycle. others are open with various springs they are all enclosed little pods with a clear click off and on.

If you are following 1 and 2 exactly as described (make sure ignition is OFF, cruise control is ON - while holding cruise control 'SET' ON (button away from you), turn the ignition on. After a second or two release the SET button. If the light doesn't go out it is not going into the diagnostic mode. My first guess is that the left handlebar multi-function switch is bad. To check it you would need to get to the wiring and use an ohmmeter to check the switch. There has been a fair number of these switches that have failed due to water incursion. Since the light is coming on you know the fuse (F12) is good. Through that fuse 12V is supplied to the cruise control switch assembly at the Green/Blue wire. When the SET button is pressed that 12V is output at the Violet/Green wire. You can use a voltmeter while the bike is on - measuring between the Violet/Green wire and ground (any BROWN wire) you should see a LOW (less than 5V) when the cruise control is on with no buttons pressed and it should rise to 12V when SET is pressed. Alternately you can use an ohmmeter to measure continuity to the switches. Green/Blue to Violet/Green (SET circuit) should show open circuit or high resistance until the SET button is pressed showing a closed circuit or very low resistance. The RESET switch is between the Green/Blue and the Yellow/Green wires.
Attached is the schematic of the cruise control sw.

The switch was not easy to take apart since they had a very small hidden star screw behind the label in the center of the assembly. I did not have a micro star wrench so I used a very small allen key to get it unscrewed.
I looked inside the switch and everything looks good. No frayed wires and the switches give a positive click when activated.
So I checked the continuity at the connector plug behind the headlight .
The set and resume button give a positive beep when checking the continuity upon activating the switch.
I don't think it is the switch.

I think once I figure out what my main problem is I will be able to diagnose the rest of the switches.
I think the light is telling me I need a new cruise unit or it needs to be reset?
Hopefully it will be easy to check the clutch switch on step 10 and 11.
