Morning all..

I am wondering if any of the brethren across the globe have got a pair of damaged mirrors in their 'round tuit' box?

I was ambling through the hills of northern rural NSW recently, and being somewhat preoccupied with the scenery, I failed to notice the mother of all bumps approaching my trusty cycle. A road bridge support had moved during a flood, causing the expansion joint of the bridge to stand proud of the road surface by about 7.5cm (three inches for the quaint folk). I hit said obstacle at about 120km/h (75 mph, again for the quaint folk) with a heart-stopping bang.

Some wise sage from this board - or the previous version of this board - once suggested attaching some cable ties to the K1200LT mirrors for just such occasions, in case the mirror parted company with the bike. This was DEFINITELY one of those occasions - BOTH mirrors were dangling at the end of their tethers. 50 cents worth of ties saved me several hundreds of dollars in replacement mirrors - almost..

With the enormous jolt that went through the bike, I have managed to break the spring clip housings on both mirrors. The retaining housing for the leading clips has cracked on both sides, thus the leading clips are no longer held in place properly. This causes the mirrors to vibrate, and fall off the bike (still on their tethers, of course!) whenever I travel over anything bigger than a beetle on the road.

I need just the inner shell of the mirror caps for both the left and right hand side. Glass and outer shell condition are not important - so long as the inner shell that holds the three spring clips in place is intact.

If anyone has a pair of damaged mirrors that they can bear to part with for a nominal fee, please send me a PM or reply through the board.

Thanks muchly

Chris, check our Classified Forum for at least a left mirror section that is just what you need at a very good price! Half of what you need anyway.

Or...
In the vent area of the mirror you can drill a hole through the mirror body and into the fairing behind the mirror and install a sheet metal screw. You won't have to repair your mirrors and you'll never have to worry about them falling off again. I secured the mirrors this way on both of the LT's I've owned and have never had a mirror problem. Tethers just don't make sense to me.

....and THAT is an excellent thing to do. :thumb:

I got SO tired of fixing mirrors.

I did mine a little differently with a "jack nut" (a rubber plug with a threaded metal insert inside) and machine screw and washer. Drill a hole in the fairing for the jack nut. When you snug it up the rubber expands and holds tight, you can easily adjust the amount of grip. In the event of a really hard impact it will still come off without ripping the fairing or damaging the mirror.

I don't think I ever did a ghetto mod write up on this...
