View Full Version : If I wanted to rebuild her ... who's the best deal in town for new parts ???

As some of you may have read , I had a bad conclusion to my ride out west.

Now we get to the fun of them telling me my absolutely mint 2002 ain't worth squat and that she's a total loss at 70% just from all the body parts damage alone.

So I am debating putting her back together myself ... or keeping her for parts for others ... and myself (As I plan on finding another LT to replace her)

So my question again is ... if you wanted to rebuild her .... with ALL NEW PARTS , NOT BONE YARD PARTS .... Is there a good source on-line to do the deed at a more reasonable price than my dealers great 10% off parts "deal"?

Thanks in advance for any help ...

Pete

OR ... conversely ... how many of you think it's a good idea for me to strip her of critical parts , like rear differential , a motor with only 30K on her , almost Brand new front and rear tire on unbent rims, ABS unit and electric braking , brand new radio , 6 disc changer ... etc etc , you get the picture.

IMO the guts of this bike are sound .... she rolls good and straight , rims aren't bent ..... heck , I don't even think she rolled as the top case was almost completely undamaged including the top case rack .... once I strip all the bodwork off her and get the clutch working again I'll take her for a ride and see how straight she rolls.

All opinions are very appreciated .

Thanks!

Chicago BMW has 15% off parts but you'll end up with spending more on parts than the bike is worth most likely.

Used parts might be a better option.

If it was me, I'd check with these guys first and see what it would cost to repair the parts that you have. They can actually weld the fairings.

Petre,
There are so many variables to think about. Most importantly you need to check for bent and/or cracked frame sections. Best course would be to tear the bike down and start itemizing all the damage. New parts are very expensive and will add up quickly. When this happened to me I was very lucky to have zero frame damage and mostly surface abrasions on the skin panels. I found a good painter. All in all I spent about 4k putting her back together and sold her for 5k. In my case the bike was extremely dependable that was structally and mechanically perfect so I just could not put her out to pasture. I sold it to a friend at work and I see it in the parking lot at work everyday. It would be very easy to get upside down moneywise so be careful.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys ...

Does anyone here know where I can get body parts prices on-line ... even MSRP only ?

It would help me at least to assess the damage and get a ballpark figure on costs.

I've decided a must is a new fairing braket to start off fresh from underneath and have solidly lined up mounting points .

I MAY change the color of the bike in which case my local body shop guy could paint many of the salvageable parts for me and I'd simply buy the others ... I'm thinking BLACK. :bmw:

Thanks again!

Pete

You can browse Tony K's (Deputy 5211) website
http://www.ltparts.com/
and see what he has. I did see the saddle bags and other parts.

If you have the space and time you want to do what Tony has done and parted out his LT. Drop him a line and see if he would do it over again. It does take a lot of time to sell everything.

Thanks for the advice Mike ... I think I may do that!
