With All the talk and complaining of final drive failures all this time and on every damn board you look at.........

got me to take a quick look at the nhtsa site I only did two years of K1200LT

first I put in BMW 2003 K1200LT

I saw 4 final drive failures listed for the 2003 here is how they are listed!

1 was listed under POWER TRAIN DRIVELINE DRIVESHAFT
2 were listed under POWER TRAIN MANUAL TRANSMISSION
1 under was listed under SUSPENSION REAR

I then switched to 2002 K1200LT

5 are listed under POWER TRAIN DRIVELINE
1 is listed under POWER TRAIN DRIVELINE CENTER SUPPORT BEARING
5 are listed under POWER TRAIN DRIVELINE DIFFERENTIAL UNIT
2 are listed under - SERVICE BRAKES
HYDRAULIC ANTILOCK

yes Final drive failure listed under brakes!

here lies part of the problem, all these should have been listed under power train drive shaft IMHO

I remember a while back someone looking and finding one failed final drive under brakes and there are two listed under brakes

but the point is there are only 4 listed for 2003 and those four are listed in three different categories, 13 listed for 2002 in 4 different categories

That will not get the attention of the nhtsa

they will say we had 1 driveline fialure 2 trans failures 1 suspension failure for 2003 hmm 1 failure for dirvline is not going to do anything !!
same with '02 they look at failures per category even with a high of 5 units in one year that won't even ruffle a feather

doesn't do much good that way

Garbage in Garbage out, GIGO.

Refers to data entry, only as good as the person putting it in.

BTW so far there are none for any 2007 model year BMW motorcycle
for 2006 one GSA final drive and one RT final drive who listed it in 3 categories

If you go to our survey, we have 161 listed:

http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/survey.php?&do=results&sid=28

And if you haven't submitted yours yet, you can at:

I know we have one, but has it been submitted to the NHTSA in a form showing just how many there have been so far?

I mean a survey is all well and good, but just handing it off to bmw na does no good right? or is there a better battle in store?

Tom

Sorry, Tom! yeah.. Garbage IN, Garbage OUT... basically means that a computer can't fix problems.. only find solutions using "good" data.

Which is why I'm waiting the relase of the DWIM chip..
Do
What
I
Mean ... because I don't always type things correctly.. and it would be great if the thing could take the Garbage I put in and FIX it.b

It is great to have the survey and its data available here, but it would be much better if all 161 of these were logged with NHTSA.

I am one of the two 2002 LT's listed on our survey under brakes,
that's because:........I followed the instructions

Be sure to list the Component Failure under the following category: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK

you followed directions, yes.

but one, it is not a brake failure, (I realize it could cause braking problems)

two, being in the correct category at the nhtsa site if all are put there might raise a flag

instead of the site having
1 brake related
1 rear diff related
1 suspension related
1 drive shaft related
1 final drive related

all under final drive there would be 5 final drive failures, we need more help than just this small community.

maybe just maybe that would throw the "flag" up I'm sure there is a certain number (and no idea of what number 5, 10, 50, ?) that will auto flag a particular complaint and make someone actually look at it, I know warranty worked that way at FOmoco at one time.

How many accidents did it take for the NHTSA to formally investigate Firestone? 1-5? I bet not!

10? 100?, perhaps it wasn't until there were so many deaths?
