View Full Version : Put GS mirrors on my 1200RT

When my legs are up on the hiway pegs and I am cruising the miles I can't see squat in my mirrors. I had read that GS mirros work great on the RT, so after I searched everywhere I resorted to the dealer. They are 62.00 each and go right in the hole next to the reservoirs. I can see directly behind me, as well as the lane to the outside, and I have adjusted the lower mirrors for wider view.
I highly recommend this to anyone out there who has been thinking about the need for better mirrors. The mirrors come in black, they match the powder coat, and I don't feel they detract from the beauty of the bike.
I also noticed that it is less work on the eyes to check the mirrors more frequently due to the upper position.

Do you have a parts number for the mirrors. Would also like to see some pictures if you have any. :rotf:

email me at cmybeemer@comcast.net for pictures. Don't have the part number, just go to parts counter and ask for a couple GS mirrors. I don't use the lower mirrors anymore. Bob.

On my very first ride on my new RT, I stopped at the first BMW dealer I came across and bought a pair of mirrors to fit the holes. Since then, I can't understand why BMW insists on those silly mirrors in the fairing. They are useless, especially with two up and gear loaded. The only thing I could see were the sleeves of our jackets.

Just got a set of RS type mirrows to put on the LT, very nice looking also.

I ordered mine last week. They should be here any day. It seems that the round GS mirrors are the only ones that fit. I wanted oval ones and my friend at the dealership looked at everything that was available. I think he said that the GS mirrors had the same part number as the ones on the R and RS.

A&S has the oval mirrors (they are from the 02 K1200RS), they seem to fit in with the style of the RT better than the round mirrors.
A&S Cycles www.ascycles.com just search mirror. Hope this helps.

Larry, do you know that they fit? I called A&S and they didn't know if they fit or not. Gael

I put K12RS mirrors on the '05 RT and the same on the '07's. I just like the looks of the oval ones better than the round GS mirrors. I think all the switch gear are the same on the K's and R's so should fit.

I've got the round GS mirrors on my RT.
Probably the best picture of the mirrors that I have right now is this ...

As someone else said, these are great for letting me see DIRECTLY behind me. I can see the bike of car in the lane right behind me ... with either mirror. I never could do that with the factory mirrors, because of the view being blocked by me or the luggage.
With the GS mirrors on the bike, I set the factory mirrors a little wider. I find myself using the GS mirrors primarily, and the factory mirrors just for a quick check of my blind spots.

Yes they fit very well as they are made for thr same switchgear. A&S has the mirrors and mounting screw and I believe there is a washer that goes with it also, I picked mine up in person and they knew in the parts dept what was needed. I have had mine on for about six months now, like'em alot.

Thanks, I'll see if they can get them and send the others back. I really like the oval ones!

My experience exactly. I did have some trouble installing them, though. It turns out a small metal burr in the left-hand switch assembly (possibly some left over casting flash) interfered with the installation. Some gentle persuasion with a file fixed it.
I'm a little puzzled how BMW ever thought that the stock mirrors were adequate.

Do you have a website link for A&S?

The $35 mirrors are from the Tucker Rocky (Rocky Tucker?) catalog so most any motorcycle dealer could get them, I've bought a bunch of TR stuff from my BMW dealer. Actually, any mirror that has a 10mm thread could work if it would fit in the hole on the back of the RT handlebars. JC Whitney has a bunch, including a pair of black semi-rectangular ones for $10.49 (for both!)
The only question I would have is to how secure they will be. You will need to thread the upper portion of the hole with a 10 mm tap (easy to find at a good hardware store) but I wonder how thick the aluminum casting is there and how much stress it would take. Also I suspect there is not enough room above the hole to use the "snug down" screw that keeps the mirror from moving. I guess really strong loctite would do the job!
Am I thinking correctly about this?

And will say this is the first bike I was almost killed on with just having it 1 week..
I was stopping at red light and could not see car behind me running a red light and flew past me on left doing approx 65 mph..
Opened my eyes up thinking better do something real fast here with mirrows.
I do not like the fact of having 2 sets of mirrows and want to make sure
that what ever direction I go that is the set of mirrows I will use.
has any one put mirrows on end of handle bars and would like to get
some input on this area of putting them.
I would like to keep the clean lines of bike if this works and then black out
the stock mirrow or make a chamber with panel door in stock mirrow area.
thanks Joe

Would like to say have owned it for 1 week and was almost rear ended .
I was stopping for a red light and could not see behind me and the car run the red light and very close call..
This is the first bike i have not been able to see behind me..
I would like to ask if anyone has thought about putting mirrows in the end of handle bars and if they like that position.
I would then black out the stock mirrow or make it a storeage area..
Any thoughts on this...Thanks Joe

This was my solution after I installed my Vstream. The GS mirrors would contact the Vstream, limiting my turning radius. I have since rotated the mirror heads 180 which narrowed the overall width about 3".

The fairing mirrors are positioned perfectly for enveloping your hands in the air pocket. The fact that you can sort of see behind you is probably an engineering afterthought.
I use large blindspot mirrors on the upper-inner corners and move the mirror out a bit in order to get a fairly good view of what is behind me. Hate the looks of the GS mirrors. I am thinking that some sort of clip-on fairing mirror would fill in the gaps.

I have new bar end mirrows for 20 plus shipping for RT.
I tried them and do not like them...
You just unscrew allen head screw in weight bar end and
screw mirrow in with gasket on mirrow...

This is my experience as well. Either the GS or the RS mirrors will fit the R1200RT

I put the GS mirrors that I had on the LT on the RT. Works great. They go on with an allen wrinch (from the bottom). I really need mirrors on the handlebars. When I stop at a Y intersection just turn the handlebar to check traffic. My head doesn't turn as much as it did years ago.

I put suburban machinery bar-backs on which helped with comfort and visablity. Then I put over the stock mirrors a set of MULTI-VEX mirrors which helped even more. They fit slightly smaller than the stock mirrors but when siting on the bike you can't really tell, and you see a much bigger field of vision w/o changing the look of the bike. I'm planning on getting mirrors on the bars for the extra safety but I don't want them to interfere with a bigger windshield. I personally don't like the look of the bar-end type.
Hope this helps,
DonD

A&S sells the same mirror for the R1200C. I have a set on my C and went to put them on the RT and they aren't even close. The base conforms to the shape of the C reservoir/lever base and are probably 3/4" across at the base while on the RT there's just a round hole maybe 1/2" diameter where the stalk base sits. The ORIGINAL mirrors from the C will fit however.
Too bad, as the RS mirror would look great on the RT.

I just picked up my 2006 R1200RT. First bike in 27 years. What a fricken great machine.
This thread was a god send. I had the dealer install mirrors as recommend here and they make a world of difference. Stock mirrors cover the blind spot and with the new mirror can almost see my own licenses plate. Just kidding.
Thanks again. Great suggestion.
