So who's going ?? I know Hal wants to take his new KLR. What days are you thinking of going down and coming back? I'll likely trailer the GS and I need to start planning now for the time off work...

Last year, didn't we leave Thursday and come back on Sunday? That would work for me again. I can't wait, I had a great time last year, even with the horizontal gravel/rock road at speed sudden parking incident. :D

I want to trailer down also.

I'll get those days off then. We can use my truck and trailer if you want. I can take 4 guys and at lease 4 bikes...

I'm in this year. I want to ride the GS down. It would be nice to have the KLR trailered down, so I can some off road practice with it.

No, nobody at dinner tonight has except Chuck... I'll try calling hopefully Friday. I want a cabin also, that was kinda cool. My cabin last year was the evening meeting spot to watch the days camcorder recordings, that was fun.

Still a long way off but looking forward to it. The Cabins are great, don't forget to ask for the discount/group rate with name of the event or "The Village idiots" or "Internet BMW RIders". The group rate may not be in effect yet, they usually post it up in late October.

I am in too. I will trailer my KLR down, or will happily take a slot on Ted's trailer and truck if it is available, or can tow any larger trailer and hold up to 6 in the Excursion.

However it works out, count me in.

It's a long shitty ride. Also, we've learned from experience that if you're gonna ride hard off-road it's best to have a truck and trailer around to get you home...

I bought a KLR just to go to DV Daze next year. My Road Glide didn't like the trip up the hill to the charcoal kilns last January. (But it made it.)

I would like to make this trip. I live in Galt, I am open to trailering or riding. I would of course share expenses with anyone who wants to share. Where are you getting the cabins at? I have been practicing my off road riding, and already am bringing the bike in for new tires and fork seals on friday. Geez, this could get a little pricey, but fun.

Make sure you book at the Ranch not the resort unless you want the $250+ a night rooms. Also mention the Internet BMW riders/village idiots for the group discount. You must call the Ranch directly for the discount - 760-786-2345

This is off the DVD Yahoo list from Brian Curry...

I contacted the person that holds rooms for us. There are still 24
rooms left in "our block". It is turning out that that weekend is the
weekend to be "at Death Valley"

There are at least three other groups there: senior tours, JPL, Photo groups.

Seniors. They move slowly. DO NOT expect them to get out of the way
quickly. They DO NOT make good fender ornaments. The Photo groups
may stop unexpectedly. Or you may not be alone in the back country.
JPL. Well they are a bunch of nerds and considering the computer
users here, might work out well.

None of them are camping. So, we will be just disturbing the "normal"
folks that thought they would be the only ones in the Furnace Creek
camping area. Try to get out of there quietly please. The good news.
The rangers like us! :):):)

My wife calls this a "Sausage Fest" and prefers to wait until spring when we ride down there with the Harley group.

It's a very informal "Rally". The main attraction is riding in the National Park. There is a brief get together at the visitor's center on Saturday afternoon where they take some pics and hand out swag.

Me too, Matt. I'm leaving the GS at home this year, and riding down on my GT.

Whether we’re dual sporting or all asphalt this year, I'd like to suggest that we all still get together for our usual Saturday morning breakfast in Beatty. Instead of eating at Rita’s in the Stagecoach casino like the last couple years, how about trying the Ensenada Grill this year? They start serving B-fast at 0700. Not that I plan to be there at 0700!

Reposted from the DVD Yahoo Group, dated today (1/20):

Those who are traveling from the California side and who like to run over
Hwy166 to Lake Isabella be aware of heavy ice and probably new snow. We're
expecting snow over Greenhorn Monday through Wednesday with levels down to
1000.

I went over three weeks ago and there was plenty of ice towards the top and
tons of sand. We've had a substantial storm since then and overnight lows in
the low 20's up there. With the impending storm, although not a lot of
moisture predicted, dumping more snow it'll be a bit more "exciting" that
has been the last few years.

I'll try to update this on Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

I was right behind my buddy on a RT up there two years ago on the way to DVD when he spun out on some ice. Looked just like the rest of the road. No harm, no foul but it was a real wakeup call.

Be careful out there.

Didn't you master the long ice crossing a few years ago? Or did I get that backwards and it mastered you? :histerica

Kidding aside, if you time it for a mid-day crossing during the warmest part of the day you'll probably be OK. But do monitor conditions and be extra careful.

OK, I tried to convince myself that the water continuing to fall form the sky was no big deal. Well, it's happened, I have abandoned my plans for the Death Valley Daze this year. In addition to the lousy weather, I keep envisioning my baby, Maggie, the Big Red RT slippin' and slidin' along roads of which I am totally unfamilar. Bottom line, I have chickened out for this year. Hope everyone who braves the trip has a great time and safe ride.

Hey John

You are another breed ;)
Its one thing being in rain. Snow or ice not sure about that.. I dont see "read" a group ride like before ...seems like everyone is on there own. Couple of years back when I rode with the group it was fine. But I do remember coming back and riding with Tom "Tlash" over I think it was 88 or 108 or god knows what I had a tight grip on the handles...thanks Tom for leading the way .

It was 88. Good lord we had no business up there. I'd like to call it our superior riding skills, but I think just dumb luck had a lot more to do with us not sliding out on the slush and ice.

"Between the Ears" is where safe riding begins and peer pressure is where it ends. Remember that line from Jurassic Park "You were so busy trying to figure out if you could make dinosaurs that you never stopped to think whether you should." No chicken involved in your decision.

By the way, as I write this it currently 33 degrees and dropping in Tehachapi. High wind advisory in steady rain expected to turn to snow by 2pm. The snow is expected to continue through Monday with accumulations up to ten inches. Hope everyone riding or driving takes it easy getting to and from DVD from NorCal. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/natur/nature-smiley-12.gif

DVDaze items:

I wrote most of this a couple of weeks ago, trying to prepare. There have been some changes since, so please review and accept it as intended.
I know most of you are experienced, but I’m posting this just as a reminder and general info.

Getting there and back:

Remember it’s winter in most parts of the country. I think SoCal is exempt from winter. If you are going through someplace cold, say fer’ instance Donner Pass, it’s important to keep warm. Layering helps. I find that if I layer my electric jacket over my electric vest I stay pretty warm.
John Pierce has a nice route from the Bay area, on roads that don’t have much traffic. If yours’ is similar, arrange to have someone know your route and check in with them when you arrive at DV. (John, with the weather like it is are you making route changes?)

Plan a route that keeps you out of the snow if possible. Try and ride with someone. Carry tools, flares, cell phone, and be prepared. KLR guys, travel in packs.

Important Notice:
Due to equipment failure, no gasoline is available at Scotty's Castle. The nearest gas is available at Stovepipe Wells (45 miles), Furnace Creek (53 miles), Beatty, Nevada (60 miles) and Tonopah, Nevada (80 miles).
We are at Furnace Creek campground, gas up when you can. It’s a good idea to gas whenever you can, if not for your own sake, for the idiot that runs out (holding up hand). (BTW, these are mileages from Scottys')

Weather notes:
Check the Death Valley Morning Report (www.nps.gov/deva/Morning.pdf )
And remember it got down to 26f last year. Bring good gear. The small hand and foot warmers can help, and carrying a few reheater packs can help a cold night. I see that many of our normal paths will possibly have snow. It is possible to run far south and back north, adding a few hours and much safety.

If you are going home early Sunday, remember that Saturday night. Being hung-over doesn’t make riding more pleasant, and can cloud your judgment.

Odds-n-Ends
While this is a “no host” get-together, we like to have everyone at the Visitor Center at about 3:30-4pm on Saturday for a group picture, SWAG give-away. Look for me and John Pierce. John will be the “official” photographer and announcer. The voice of DVDaze so to speak. Other planned items are the 7pm “where the hell is (insert name here) and the “we need to go get (insert name)’s bike, followed by the semi-finals of the ADVRIDER Arrrrrgggggg off.

Take advantage of what the park rangers have to offer in the way of tours and special events. Check the ranger programs before you go.
The Swag:

Every year we’ve had a swag give away. Most years just about everyone gets something. If you can hit up your local dealer for some swag please get a business card for each item. If you win some swag, please let the giver know what you got and that you appreciate them supporting DVDaze. We will have some postcards with stamps ready to send out.

The Rangers:

Sharon (a park ranger) has been there since forever and knows us. And tells the other rangers so they don't start stressing when all these motorcyclists show up. Yes, that has happened in the past. After a day or two of patrols they figured it out. No trouble here.
While the rangers are friendly to us, remember they are there to keep the peace and enforce the laws. Don’t get pissed off if you get a ticket for something you did, and try to not give them a reason to visit your campsite in an unfriendly mode.
Some folks noticed park rangers WALKING around at NIGHT "sniffing in the air." I would expect the same this year. Consider this, and act appropriately.

Put away the alcohol at night. We don’t want to be tempting the visiting teenagers.

With the ability to reserve Walk-in sites, it is possible that civilian's might become mixed in amongst us. If that is the case, and they get upset, can I remotely suggest that, if possible, work with them and the rangers to rearrange us and them to minimize the impact on the civilian's. They did not know that this is "our" weekend. I seriously doubt that will be the case this year, but it is possible.

And if the rangers have taken it upon themselves to rearrange civilian's and us DO NOT BITCH. Work with them. They know that we tend to take over "the slot" and work out from there.

If you are coming by 4 wheels, BRING WOOD. The rangers like folks that do that.

When you leave, tidy up. Use the dumpsters. Bring some empty plastic grocery bags to carry stuff to the dumpsters.

DO NOT cut any trees, or burn any brush. Even if it is just "laying there." BTDT, Robert Laposta can tell you it is NOT A GOOD THING.

If you want a DVD button, let Fulton know:

Hi, all,

As in years past, I'll be making personalized buttons for DVD. If you're going, please send me your name (as you want it on the button), then remember what name you gave me so when you look me up to pick it up, I'll know which bag it's in. (If your name is John Smith, butt you told me "Goofy Rider," it's not going to be in the "S" bag.)

If you invite your friends to DVD, and they're not on any of the lists, send me their names also, so they'll have a button.

I'll be camping, and eating at the 49'er Cafe, with some sojourns into the adjoining bar.

History
Since I was recently asked, DVD was started by IBMWR and the Original Village Idiots. The OVI were started because of the Cheeseburger Chronicles on the IBMWR list. I set up a Macjordomo list on a Mac SE30 and started the Village Idiot list. DVD was set up and the first few years were small enough that we could all eat supper and breakfast together. There are ride reports scattered about the web. For various reasons it has always been a “non-event”, and Brian Curry has been the “non-leader”.

Hi ALL

Jim and I made it to Mojave about 5pm, had a great steak dinner and a few beers.
Tehachapi at 415 was 32 degrees and snowing when we went through, decided not to stay. It appeared we would wake up to a winter wonder land and frozen roads.
The snow was not sticking and was only snowing on top of the pass but we just heard they closed the grape vine and Tehachapi travelers were being escorted by the CHP.

TRAVEL safe everyone.

some pics first of airing down on the way to the Racetrack Notice the white stuff . I had the NX650 which was new to me and I had no idea of fuel milage so the Pics in the snow were as far as I got -estimated total distance was 180+ round trip / when Doug Jim and John left to continue I looked in the tank and saw NO GAS! so Hal volenteered to shepard me back . we made it to the pavement and then to the highway I decided that Stovepipe wells was the better choice ( a ten mile savings) when I filled up 3.16 Gal for 124 miles

Good thing we turnd around I think I would have been 10-15 miles short!

Well it was quite a wet and wild trip to DVD and back, but Death Valley was worth it. Here's start of some pics from the trip.

Snow and Ice on Wildrose, Jim and I made the sensible discission not to go skating with the GS's. The snow had melted and turned into a thin sheet of ice and continued around the next couple of bends.

A common problem with the KLR is the gas tank venting. I believe that once all air is purged from the tank fuel vapor is all that remains. Engine heat usually keeps the fuel warm, but I think sustained high speed riding in a cold wet environment cools the tank enough to cause the liquid fuel to absorb the vapor above it and create a vacuum. If this occurs faster than the vent allows air in to equalize pressure then fuel starvation will occur, especially at lower fuel levels.

Several companies make kits to "T" the vents, including Fred at Arrowhead.
http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/parts_frames.html

Or EagleMike recommends "The best fitting to use is a "Y" - but lots of tees out there work fine. Size 1/4".

Location just below the carb, so the single leg of the "Y" goes down, one leg goes up to the carb, and one leg goes up and lays in the right side top of the airbox.

The "Y" can be found at auto parts stores as noted. If you're ordering stuff, it might be cheaper just to get the kit than chase parts unless your auto parts place is very close."

I have this mod on my KLR and no venting problems.
YMMV
