I am planning a trip down to North Georgia 2nd weekend of Oct. Meeting up with a cousin near Winston Salem on Thursday, then traveling to a cabin located in North Georgia, nearest towns -Mineral Bluff and Blue Ridge on Friday. This cabin is very close to Lake Nottley. From there we would like to head to Deals Gap,(about 74 miles) and the Cherhola Skyway. Deals Gap scares me a bit,(not the road, some of the riders), but I love the Skyway.
Any recommendations for the trip from Winston Salem to the cabin, and other roads within reach once we get there. I've done the Parkway, but would like to find some twistier/less traveled alternatives. Once at the cabin, we will have 2 full days of riding available. The guys that I've ridden with for years have sportbikes, and we all enjoy twisty roads (preferably with good road surface).
I know there are great roads all over the place in this area, but I would like to set up game plan in advance..

Man North GA is my backyard. I am at work right now pondering the idea off skipping out early and heading up for the loop.
Now what is loop. (Numbers are road numbers)
19 out of Dahlonega (NorthEast) till it dead ends on 129.
Head North on 129 until it intersects with 180 (Wold Pen Gap road)
180 West till Suches. Until it intersects with 60
60 South back to Dahlonega.
Now You could also go NORTH on 60 out of Suches and into Blue Ridge. That is an awsome road.
Another Road to keep in mind is GA 348 Richard Russel Scenic ByWay....... awsome road with some awsome views.
136 West is also a great Road. Look those up on google maps. You will see what I am talking about.
Send me a PM if you wish to meet. I will come up there and spend the day riding with you guys. on those roads. You will learn once you look on the map that a lot of those roads intersect allowing you to create a pretty nice loop around (Dahlonega, Suches, Helen and Blue Ridge.

Try the attached links. "Georgia's Dragon - The Suches Loop" is a great ride, especially this time of year. Be careful on 180 as there are some "hairpins" in there! Great ride though. Just be nice in the populated areas especially if you ride with the straight pipe crowd. Gotta stop at TWO for some great food and good company! Enjoy!

If you have never done it, you have to ride "The Dragon" and get a sticker for your bike at the store. After that then go ride some good roads Cherohola Skyway, Hwy 28 Robbinsville to Franklin NC.

I would honestly have to say, I would be Imbarresed to put a Dragon sticker on my bike these days.
Riding the Gap and getting a sticker proves that you were patient enough to follow an inexperienced rider going 15MPH for eleven miles on a large bore twin with loud pipes.
The nice thing about Deal's Gap, is that it keeps the majority of the bad riders off of the good roads. This was a quote from my neighbor. He has a lot of insite from his sixtyfive years.
One road I try to avoid is 129 from Robbinsville to Maryville.
If you must do that area, try Yellow Creek to US 28. From US 28 look for Upper Tuskeegee. Then look for Joyce Kilmer National Forest and follow the sign to Cherohala Skyway.
This will keep you from MC traffic that doesn't understand that NC statewide speed limit is 55MPH unless posted.
55MPH is FAST on most roads.
