Howdy All.
I hope you are well.
I just loaded my bike on a ferry and i stuffed my Darrien in the trunk and it will not open. Any help would be appreciate d as it will be a chilly ride if i can not open the trunk once this ferry stops.
Best regards . tony

Tony, not being there, my best guess is that the extra stuff in the trunk is pushing up on the lid, causing more load on the latches. Try pushing down real hard on the trunk lid as you ease the latch open. Don't force it as you might break the latch. If something is caught in the latches, that might help as well. Good luck.

Also be careful pressing down too hard as you will probably break the pins on the little vanity mirror door and even the glass itself (7 years bad luck!). Of course this presumes they aren't already busted. Mine go once a year or so.

Not to hijack a thread, but after the pins broke on my vanity mirror the first time, I followed Dick's lead and used a short piece of piano hinge. Hasn't broken since and works great.

If it's of any help to you - the Trunk Latch repair instructions do have lots of pictures, diagrams and whatnot of how it's all put together in there.

Well.....one of my pins had fallen out and into the latching works, which prevented the works from unlatching the lid.....................................
Someone suggested the following and it worked for me....(although I had a shot of whiskey first).......
wrap the head of a small common screwdriver in a soft cloth and insert it up under the rear of the lid..with the latch in the open position, pry the lid up and out...and pop, it's open.
Don't know if it'll work for your problem and if you pry too hard youy could break something so..........

Wow, I did not even know that latch handles broke. This indeed is what happened to me I found out yesterday after the ferry arrived in Muskegon from Milwaukee and I was able to get the bike out. I thought it was just stuck and was pushing down on the top and then noticed that the handle was broke.
Is this really that common? Also from the Millenhaus site it looks like the only replacement is their unit or an entire lower portion of the top case. Is this true? BMW does not sell it? Bummer. The Millenhaus one does sound like it would last forever though.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Here is a picture of the broken latch.

Hi Tony,
Unfortunately the broken latch happens quite often. BMW only sells the lower half of the case and if I recall correctly it is about $800. You'll either need the Millenhaus unit or one from bmwrider79 who isanother member of the site that also makes them.
bmwrider just sells the latch whereas Millenhaus sells an entire kit.
I think BMW subs out the latches to the same company that makes the final drives. :D
Good Luck,
Kevin

Hi Tony,
Unfortunately the broken latch happens quite often.
While I was putting in some new wiring, I decided to put a drop of oil on the mechanism inside the lower portion. Made an incredible difference to the feel of it and hopefully will prevent breakage. I used one drop of engine oil on each part.

Mine broke the same as yours. I finiglled it open and just took the pin out of the trunk on the broken side.
Now of course I open and close the trunk CAREFULLY :)
locks up OK and latches OK Lube does work and pin inspection is recommend
