View Full Version : Gear lube in engine

I bought a 2003 K1200GT three months ago and changed the oil myself today for the first time. Things went OK I thought until I was putting things away after finishing. I had put 3 quarts of BMW 20W-50 oil in and a half quart of BMW gear lube. I had already started the engine and let it idle a couple of minutes to make sure I had oil pressure. I'm thinking I probably didn't do any damage and just need to drain the oil and refill. Any advice?

Rick:
I would just let it warm up to operating temp., then drain and refill. There should be no damage. You may want to change the filter too.

Good luck - Ray

I agree with the others, just warm it up, drain it, change the filter, and re-fill.

I fact, you could probably just run it as is untill the next oil change, the gear oil should contain no additives that are harmful to the engine, and the dillution is high so the viscosity of the oil will still be in the right range. Changing it will be safer though.

[snip] and the dilution is high so the viscosity of the oil will still be in the right range[snap]

Actually, they are already in the same viscosity range. This chart was posted the other day on another list by a petroleum engineer. David can give the engineering explanation, but in simple terms, engine oil and gear oil viscosities are measured by SAE on different scales so although the numbers are different e.g. 20-50 vs 80-90, the viscosity is the same.

Thanks for the information guys. I drained the oil including the oil in the filter and filled it with new oil and everything is fine (after 250 mile ride). Now I'll see how much of an adventure I can make of changing the gear oil. Thanks again.
