i would actually like to start out on the triumph tiger. nice size, still comfortable for long periods, but not too much to handle as a first bike. if you guys have any suggestions for a good starting out bike that isnt super sports bike style let me know!

Ruth rides a Triumph Sprint RS. They don't make that anymore, but do have the Sprint ST.
With your affinity for Ducati clothing, the Monster might make a good bike.
Then again, you can ALWAYS find a Suzuki SV650 in Cycle Trader really cheap. It's small enough for you to get your feet wet, yet big enough that you won't get bored in a weekend.

A tiger is a pretty big bike. I started on on a 700cc cruiser for about 1 year, 15,000 miles then jumped to an LT. My brother bought a suzuki dl650. I took it out to break it in for him. It is a pretty nice bike for the price. They even put ABS on their 2008. Not sure about seat height i think it is around 32 inches. Can't hardly beat the price on them. They are fuel injected and get around 52 mpg without changing any of the sprockets. If you decide to get a bike, I would start with a small cheap one and work your way up. There was even a few guys that ran a dl650 in the IBR. The SV650 is also a nice bike. I think the dl and the sv use the same engine (could be wrong).

+1 on the SV650. A great bike to start on; easy to manage and great as a learn platform. Then as your skills and confidence increase the bike just goes right along with you, leaning a little more, accelerating a little faster, braking a little harder. And it will continue up to the point where folks bolt on fairings and do some pretty hardcore roadracing on them; just went to some races at Infineon Raceway where some guys were really hauling it around the track on these. I've ridden them a few times and they're an absolute hoot, and just about as reliable as a hammer.

Hi Caitlin,
Nice name....I have a 16 year old daughter with the same name and also spelled "correctly"!
The other guys have some sound advice regarding a bike but if you want to really make your dad jealous start talking about getting an R1200GS Adv. You'd be the coolest student on campus :D .
Good Luck,
Kevin

I don't believe it!!!
Grif is sharing his doobie with the clown...did he offer any body else a hit? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Hey C, it was great meeting you at CCR. Hope you make it next year. If Honda still makes the Shadow I know a lot of ladies have gotten their starts on them, but I would also have to lean towards the SV650 for a great all around bike to start off with.

HI . Glad to see a new female rider !!!! I am new here at the BMWLT group and a new rider as well... My dad bought me a bike a looooooooong time ago (when I was 16 -- now in my early 40's hahhaah) but my mom sold it ASAP so never had a chance ...
I started riding with a suzuki bike and passed my motorcycle license from there... I moved to a Ducati but I guess it was too sporty for me ...or maybe just too old for it  .... now I have a BMW 1200KLT with a hack --- i feel safer and its like being in a parade all the time.... I LOVE IT ( my 14 yr old son too... you have a lot of support so thats really AWESOME... go for it !!! Let me know if I can help from a girls perspective...

Kawasaki showed up at Sturgis this year with several demo bikes. I was really impressed with a model called the "Versys". From what I was told, the bike has seen European roads for a few years and was introduced in the US this year as a 2007 model. A nice, upright seating position, virtually no vibration through the footpegs or handlebars, a light and easy feel at low speeds, and a really surprising amount of power for a 650cc bike. I took a 20 mile test ride at varying speeds and conditions and I believe this bike would be pretty comfortable at 70mph for extended trips and a really fun bike for around town and short hops. The Tiger as a great bike and would, for me, be a real keeper. I don't know what your skill level is but with 1050 cc's and 115 horsepower, it fits for all occassions.
