We are on our way to Tan-Tar-A! :D

We left last evening after work. Spent our first night in Baker City. The BW is a nice motorcycle friendly motel with a great restaurant. Our first stop today was the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (http://www.blm.gov/or/oregontrail/). It is a Rose City Grand Tour checkpoint this year and worth the visit.

We logged a meezley 474 miles today. That was 200 under plan and will only make Monday that much more of a drag crossing Kansas.:( After our OT stop we cruised the slab to Payette and caught Hwy 52 to Horseshoe Bend.

We then treked north on 55 to NF-24 to Lowman (nice pavement all the way). From there we took 21 to Stanley for a stretch break and some gas. Stanley is having a Salmon festival this weekend and is very crowded and the traffic heavy.

We left Stanley for a second RCMC Grand Tour checkpoint at Redfish Lodge (http://www.redfishlake.com/) that is just 5 miles south of Stanley on Hwy 75. We had dinner at the lodge and again the place was crowded. We could see smoke in the hills south and east of us. We heard that one of the local towns was under a forest fire seige and the locals desended on this lodge. Too bad for us. The lodge was a cool place and could have offered more than just a place to eat.

We decided to take a northern route out of the Sawtooth range and skip the Ketchum (http://www.ktvb.com/news/localnews/stories/ktvbn-aug2407-ketchum_events.6847861f.html) fire. About 50 or so miles north on 75 hooked us up with 93 south to Arco where we took 26 to Blackfoot. The entire way was thick with forest fire smoke. The temperature fluctuations were also noteworthy: for instance we started on 93 with 87 degrees and it fell to 67 just before Arco when we jumped onto 26. The temperature started to climb back up even though the sun had set (something we couldn't see because of the smoke BTW) and when we got to Blackfoot the temp had climbed back to 87. We had given thought of stopping to put on our jacket liners, but were glad we decided not to.

We again slabbed it to Pocatello on I-15 for the night. Tomorrow will bring us a very looong day to make up some time. After all, Alaskafish is almost three days ahead and somewhere between here and there. We gotta make up some ground! :p

Day 1 (Milwaukie to Baker City) - 307 miles
Fuel - 8.653
MPG = 35.49 (Gorge headwind):(

Day 2 - 474 miles
Fuel - 10.095 gal
MPG = 46.95 (gotta love higher elevations):D

Avg $ per Gal. = 3.199 (premium grade)

Ernie,
Thanks for the detailed report on your travels, It helps the unfortenate ones like myself to have a life to dream about! I wish I was out riding! Make up the time best you can but don't push it to much okay? Watch out for the weather in the central plains states and enjoy! Keep them posts coming.

Just got in about 5:00 this evening. You are gonna melt Ernie! It was 95' and about 95% humidity! Could not wait to get to the room to cool down. I'll have to check up on the Booze Brothers later tonight for you and Brian especially!

We made it through Ketchum on Saturday morning with a lot of smoke and fire apparatus all around. But the road was still open then. I doubt it now! We spent the weekend at Marilyn's sister's house in lovely Nebraska! Left there this morning and slabbed it most of the way down 28 along the Missouri river.

Glad to have arrived!

I'm not a part of the Northwest forum, but I am sitting -- as we speak -- next to Alaskafish and Mrs. Alaskfafish in the lobby at Tan-Tar-A. How cool is that?

I've been fortunate enough to meet several folks here at CCR today, and looking forward to more of the same this week!

John,
I am glad you and Marilyn made it okay. Enjoy and have one for me. The redhead is starting to come around but still will need brain surgery in the next week or two. I am confident she will be fine. I caught 4 salmon in my back yard this evening so all is not bad here.....

We made it! Last night we rolled in at 00:45 local time (glad we are still on West coast time on our body clock). We woke up in Glenwood Springs and the Best Western internet was not working. Couldn't give a ride report.

We left at 07:00 and after 14 hours in the seat. 3.5 hours of stopped time, and 952 miles later we were unpackin'. Pauline was just 48 miles from a Saddle Sore (but saddle sore none the less :( ).

We are on our way to check-in and lunch. See you in the lodge.

Congrats on the safe trip. For those of us chained to a desk this week, how did you do dodging the rain? The weather maps of the midwest look challenging.

Ernie -

You needed the hot pools at Glenwood Springs AFTER the near 1000 mile day! Have a great time in Arkansas.

John -

Nebraska?!!? Take a ride for us folks still in the NW.

And I hear that the weather is ideal there. Nice and comfortable. Makes you want to sit out on the patio and drink a mint julep. Or perhaps put on all of your gear and go for a noon time ride.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is arriving safely. Have great time all and please do have beer for me. Nah! Never mind about that, I'll have my own beer thanks.

Weather? What weather? Seriously, we only had a bad patch from Green River, UT to Dinosaur, CO. We hit a cell that dumped huge drops and X-winds that kept us working hard to keep in our lane. Other than that we have had beautiful weather (excepting the heat and humidity). Cut the chain for a short ride every day in honor of those of us stuck here in Tan-Tar-A. It is a hard life.:histerica

Wow! You got that right. We are lounging around the Condo drinkin' wine and Corona's. It's a tough life you know? :rotf:

We'll have to catch Grand Junction on the way home from Alabama. Gotta visit the Kids (Our daughter and her new husband). Anyone got a "Have-To-See" place to go from Tan-Tar-A to Alabama?

:)

Not sure where you're going in Alabama, Ernie - butt if you're near the Barber Museum in Birmingham, I hear it's a must see.

Thanks for the input Dick. I've heard of the Barber Motorsports Museum. I'll put it on the list for sure. Are you here (Tan-Tar-A) some where? Would like to meet ya. :)

I was wondering when we would hear from Dan. I was starting to think he became lost on his long journey.Perhaps the 737 had a final drive bearing go out. But that picture proves that you and Dan are alive and well and living up to predictable standards!!! I have had to eat my share of ice cream here as well. It has been a stifling hot 80 degrees here the last 2 days. I hope you guys are having a great time and I'll see ya all when you get back.
