Here's a little background info: My 1150rt overheated - Long story! The oil sight glass melted out and the oil drained out. It finally shut itself off at some point. I wasn't around when it happened, but I know the engine didn't seize up. I put a new site glass in and I put a new oil filter and oil in the engine, but when I tried to start it, the engine turned over fine, but it did not start. I took out one of the spark plugs and noticed that no sparks were present while trying to start it. That's when i found some information on the Hall Sensors. A fellow rider suggested that one or both of these sensors may have gone bad from the intense heat and to replace them - saying my engine is probably fine.

I'm trying to diagnose this, but I have no idea where this sensor is located. I thought it would be located behind the front engine cover, but I just want to make sure before I start tearing stuff apart. In general, does anyone know if this is an easy job?

It is located behind the front cover. They are not too tough to get to. Here on ebay is one to look at (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-R1150RT-R1150RS-R1150GS-Ignition-Timing-Sensor_W0QQitemZ4645417429QQcmdZViewItem)!

Gives you a better look than a parts fiche.

Which is here! (http://www.ascycles.com/Illustrated_catalog/R1150RT/catalog_frameset.html)

I've only played with mine on my airhead. High heat can certainly effect them.

Good luck!

The individual hall effect sensors can be replaced. Over at the Chromehead.org site (For the R1200C) they show how to diagnose the problem and how to fix it. Apparently you can buy the sensors from the manufacturer for not much money. I don't know if the RT plate is the same as the one found on the "C" but the sensors might be the same. Might be worth looking into.
