View Full Version : Supplementary brakelights (e.g. Givi topbox)?

Has anyone connected any supplementary brakelights on an RT? I have the Givi box with additional led's and, of course, the way the lights work on the RT isn't 'normal' so the suggested Givi wiring won't work.
I suspect relays are called for with wires back to the levers?

I put these Hyperlites on mine. The lights are dual function, and have 16 LEDs per side. I had to run the tail light wire to the wire for the auxiliary power socket, and the brake light wire to the wire running to the tail light. the instructions are very clear.

I have Hyperlites on my R1100 but for the RT I need to connect the led's in the Givi box. Their instructions say to connect between ground and the wire running to the brake light - which isn't going to work on the RT........

I connected the brake/running lites and a set of hyperlites to my 1200RT without the use of a relay or any direct wiring to the battery. Just connected them to the wires to the rear tail light. No problems at all after 12,000 miles. I wouldn't worry about it. Just connect them and go ride.

On the R1200RT, when the brake is off, a 25% duty cycle square wave is sent to the single-filament brake light bulbs so they light up as a tail light.
You can connect an auxiliary, non-flashing LED, such as you have in your Givi top box, directly to this without problems. It will light up as a tail light, at 25% of its full brightness. When the brakes are applied it will go to full brightness. The relatively low current drain of the LED's should not cause any trouble with the brake light current sensors in the onboard ZFE computer.
The problem only occurs when you attempt to connect flashing brake lights to the single-filament bulb. Most are not designed to work with the RT wiring.

On my '06 RT I have a set of dual function hyper-lites on the license plate bracket and a set on my bmw big top case. I spliced the top box set into the leads from the license plate set. They are connected with a three prong trailer plug. Work great, no issues with CanBus.
