View Full Version : Reverse Inoperative

I removed my battery and charged it and reinstalled it. The battery is 3 years old. Now it starts fine, but the reverse will not work on it. When I put the selecter switch in reverse, the light comes on indicating that it is in reverse, and when I push the reverse button, the rmp will rise slightly then go back down to the normal idle rpm and the yellow light will flicker on and off and then go out. My friend told me that he thinks the battery is too weak to operate the reverse motor, and I am inclined to believe him since there were no problems with the reverse prior to the battery problem. I am thinking that a new battery is probably in order. If anyone has had this problem or something similar please let me know. Thanks, JLF

I think you nailed it. At 3 years your battery is probably ready for retirement...
Other problems will crop up soon as the LT has many electronic components that require a battery with a full charge.

While what you describe isn't exactly what I remember with my 'reverse problems', but the dealership ended up (after a first 'failed' attempt -- not sure what they did) replacing a switch (on warranty) that took care of it and have no problems since.

There is a wire that you did not reconnect to the battery. There is a separate wire that controls the reverse. Look down there with a flashlight and find the wire!

I will give it another try. I originally did leave a wire off, but found it and reconnected it but will try again and see if I missed one.

It does not sound like a battery problem to me, since the motor starts fine. When you put the big switch in reverse, it engages some gears between the starter and the tranny. When you press the button the starter turns the tranny, and the engine revs up to supply more juice to the starter. When you put it into reverse, before pushing the button, try pushing the bike forward with your feet to be sure the gears are engaged.

:) Hi there
My 2000lt did that same thing just after Itook delivery of it. Took it back under warranty to have it looked at, turns out that it was a poor wiring connection down near the battery, hope this helps

My favorite trick is to forget to push the button. And, I forget to have the engine running.

I had that happen to me, same symptoms as you after having a dealer swap out a battery for me while I was at work. The problem was that when they installed the new battery, they put the power lead from the starter on the negative side. So check to see if that is the case or, perhaps the power lead is not connected at all.
