I am trying to plan a twisty road ride and need some local knowledge for a certain portion in Idaho. The roads in question are from hwy 21 at Idaho city thru placerville,Crouch and Banks to hwy 55. Are these roads paved? I am tie in Lolo pass, hwy 93,21, and 55 without leaving the mountains and avoiding big cities.

Brian,

North of Idaho City is a paved road. Lowman - Garden Valley - Banks is a paved scenic byway (Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway). Pictures yesterday on Advrider indicate that the roads in Placerville are not. Hope that helps

Hello Ernie,
I was planning on going this weekend but I have to go to a wedding party for a friend. So, possibly in the next week or two. I really enjoyed Lolo and hwy 21 the last time. The other roads I have not tried yet, So I need to get em done. Interested?

I hear Lolo pass is great, if it isn't raining. :) Gotta try it that way some day.

Have a good ride, whenever you make it out that way.

Hey Brian -

If you do the 12 over Lolo Pass take the time to stop at the interpretiive center just on the west side of the pass - it's pretty good with info on Lewis & Clark's Corps of Discovery. When are you planning to go?

Great ride last weekend.

The road from Garden Valley, to Placerville, to Idaho City is all dirt. Good twisty road that could rub some rubber off the toes of your boots is Stanlley to Lowman, over the top to Idaho City. Idaho City to Boise, quick trip through Boise then up 55 to Mcall and Riggins. That road will leave you smiling for days.

Great route. Highway 12 to Missoula, south to Salmon, to Challis to Stanley, run into Sun Valley for lunch, then back track to Stanley over the top to Lowman, over the top again to McCall, to Boise, to McCall, To Riggins and back to Lewiston where all the fun started!!!

Enjoy that route. I used to run it on a regular basis. Now the ole LT sits under a cover and waits for a day here and there to run to the coast!

Gene,
Have you been on this road? According to this website it is paved. Been there done that is always better knowledge though. You can't always believe the printed word I guess. Here is what the state says of this road: Roadway
This is a two-lane roadway with no passing lanes, but there are several turnouts for scenic viewing. The paved roadway is maintained year around, but often has a snow floor during winter months. I have been on hwy 21 and lolo (hwy12) and thats why I would like to do it again. Excellent roads! Although when I road lolo it was cold and raining, and the area around Hwy 21 was on fire and very smoky in places.

Brian,

Gene is a Boise native and knows the roads - I believe he was answering your initial question about Idaho City to Placerville to Garden Valley - The last road that you discussed - The Scenic Byway is a different road and IS paved but starts in Lowman. We rode it on our 21 scenic byway ride a few years ago.
Gene is also saying - and I agree - that 21 from Stanley all the way to Boise is a very twisty road as well. I made the mistake of "finishing" up a long day on that road - boy was I tired but smiling when done.

Steve

P.S. - Gene we still owe you a "tour" of the twisty local roads around here!

It would be interesting if we were riding in the same locale and didn't realize it! Again! We did that in Utah last year, remember? We will be traversing central ID on Saturday through Stanley. You gunna be in the area?

Gene,
Sorry for the confusion on my part, I have not been thinking straight lately. My ex girlfriend who is actually still a very good friend had a blood vessel in her brain rupture and had a stroke last week. I have been spending 10-16 hours a day with her in the hospital room taking care of her and making sure the staff did not kill her. I also had to sleep sometime and work. It has been a long week. She should be released tomorrow to recover before going back in for brain surgery. She has whats called AVM. Thanks for the info and putting up with my confusion. Thanks to you Steve for helping me see the light.

Ernie,
It is really going to be a last minute decision for me.Tish is starting to get better and will be staying with her stay at home mom friend so she can have 24hr assistance. If she keeps improving and does not have her surgery this week I will try and get out for a ride. She is probably getting tired of me and I could use a bike ride and a few margaritas!!! I figure it will take at least 1500 miles to get rid of that hospital smell.

Brian, sorry to hear about your friend. Wondered where you've been lately. Hopefully things will improve immensely for her after the procedure. If she is in good hands, your Bike is your best means of relief for sure buddy. Hope you get in an enjoyable ride!

We're hitting the road early Wednesday morning for CCR!

Bon voyage John and Marilyn. Ride safe and let Dan and I know where all the Dairy Queens are when you get back.

Brian -

Sorry about your friend - tough times sitting at a friend's bed side waiting for that moment when you know they're going to be OK. A good long ride - maybe a twisty or two - would be a good prescription for you. You fly!

Brian,

Sorry to hear about Tish. I'm glad she has good people around her to help during this difficult time. That can be worth more than all the doctors and hospitals combined.

Thanks John,Denny, and Ken. It looks like she will be checked out today until her next surgery. Unfortenately her Neurosurgeon is booked until October! She will need to be watched 24/7 until surgery because her odds of reoccurance are very high in the months following the original rupture. So, If anyone knows a good neurosurgeon let me know. Make sure they pick a good place for next years CCR because I will be going next year!

Gosh Brian... What is going on up there? I'm sure your friend will pull through just fine, especially with you looking after her and her health care needs. Call me if you'd like to chat.
