Wings of gold

Any idea what kind of LED´s are fixed inside the famous "Wings of
Gold"?.
I tried 4 pcs of 12V red LED´s. But anyway, it´s a poor light.

I would be glad to have a detailed Photo.

Why bother with the original leds used in the wings of gold ??? If you go hunting thru the archves you will find they were T10 leds. these have 4 leds in them and a resistor as well so they run off 12 volts, you can buy them off ebay any day of the week.


Get yourself some Luxeon 3 watt amber leds and wire them up thru a 4ohm resistor.

I used 2 per side on my bike and they are *DAMN* bright and easily seen during the day or night!
When you put the leds in the clear plastic wind deflectors on the side of the bike just put the lexeon leds back to back.as they are only using a 50% duty cycle they produce next to no heat.

I made mine. You can buy them from CycleGadgets or... You can buy the L.E.D.'s from Autozone. They are called hyperbright 194 replacements (about $15). You can also buy the sockets for them as well (about $3). A couple wire splices ($2 for 10), some wire, and you should be all set. Just remember to make the wires about 4" longer than they need to be. It's what we in the "business" call a service loop. It just let's you remove the turn signal housing or the wings with a little extra play.

Here's another neat looking trick: Whenever you are working with two or three wires, make them a couple of inches longer. Then put one end in a vice or whatever to hold them, and put the other end in a drill. Then give them a spin. It just makes a neat looking wire set. You can make them as tight or loose as you like.

The hyperbright 194 leds are still nowhere near as bright as dual 3 watt luxeon leds, or even a single 3 watt luxeon for the matter.

the luxeon leds brightness is measures in lumens, not mcd, so *MUCH* brighter and visible very,very easy in day light

In my saddlebags i mounted 3 x Luxeon 1 watt leds, the star units.

NO heat sink required. I tested this very technically... i wired the leds to the bike and ran the hazzard lights with my finger stuck to the back of the leds. i figuerd if my finger gets burnt then they are too hot.
There was no heat.
there is some info on this i posted in the archive section of this site in the Australia section.

I used 3 per side only cos they are so expsnsive, but you can fit up to 6 per side and run them from 12 volts.
The attached pdf will help for wiring/resistors to use for this.
i have not tried or tested running 6 per side, so follow this at your own risk.

Nice to see that people are still happy with using my ideas!
Creating the wings of Gold was only for safety reasons, but watching how many people use them is nice to see.

I never thought it would become another Farkel for our bikes!

I am Glad that Sean at Cyclegadgets is still selling them.

At least I do not have to do the tech support anymore!
Now I just enjoy the pleasure of seeing all of the bikes using my products.
Feels cool to see... :)
