View Full Version : Thinking of an RT

I have scheduled a test ride Friday on an '06 1200RT with ESA, cruise etc. I currently ride a 1200LT with a Unigo trailer and before that an 1100RT. I'm really looking forward to getting back on an RT but I want to be some what objective when I go for the test ride. My wife and I usually do one or two big rides each year and the rest of the time it's just me on the bike. My wife of course loves the comfort and added storage space of the Unigo. Is the 1200RT able to tow a Unigo trailer? I read somwhere that BMW does not recommend towing a trailer with the 1200RT, something about the wiring harness. Is there anything I should watch for while I'm on the test ride? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.
Best regards,
Wilson High

BMW as I last recall also does not recommend towing a trailer on the LT either so I would not let that deter you from an RT. There are folks who tow trailers with RT's, with apparently no issues I am told.

My $0.10... The only concern I might have is reduce clutch life and stess on the final drive. But the clutch is a normal wear item anyway and most FD failures do not seem related to load, aggressive riding or lubrication. It seems to be bad luck, poor assembly, defective parts, or a flawed design. The relatively tall 1st gear reduces stress on the drivetrain and the engien itself is pretty bulletproof. Just avoid lugging it with a full load (I'd stay over 3000RPM)

Ideally, I would try to keep the total weight of the passengers, luggage and triailer within 50lbs of the maximum gross vehicle weight.

The best thing that you can do is to forget it.
It creeps into your very being.
You will get the bug just like the rest of us and it will be your ruination.
Go with the LT or GT, they don't seem to cause this problem with the bug.

You should not have any issues with a Unigo. It doesn't hold as much as the 2 wheeler trailers and, unless you are planning on hauling a load of bricks or something, you won't even know it is behind you. I plan on getting a new RT in the spring and have a 2 wheel trailer that I plan to haul behind. I don't over fill it, mostly some light luggage, a cooler, and a place to easily throw jackets, helmets, etc., when stopping. The dealer here wasn't sure about a trailer on a RT, something about with the partial ABS it may not be recommended, but like another post said, it isn't recommended with a LT either, and I hauled mine quite a few miles behind my LT and, other than allowing a bit extra for stopping, I never even knew the trailer was behind me. I think that BMW are just protecting themselves by not recommending a trailer. There are hitches available for the RT and others haul them with no apparent problems from what I can find out. If the bike can't haul the Unigo than something is wrong with the universe. I fully expect to haul the much bigger trailer behind my RT when I get it.

My only thought is how high first gear is on RT and life of clutch..
I do not like it when wife and I are on it in high mountain areas fully
loaded and starting out on steep grades.
My thoughts if you get caught in awkward grades...Joe

Can you keep both. I have both and love both of them. Each are different and both are fun to ride long and short. The wife the likes to ride on the back of the LT and when she rides, she lights the RT. So if you could keep both.....................

Guess I need to upgrade my glasses before anything,,,,I certainly didn't see the post date, sorry for the confusion. Hope he did decide on what to do and maybe he will let us know how he made out. Guess I better look at the posts a little closer.
