Aussies, Thought I'd drop you a line and say g'day. Been a inactive member for some time but just lately been pretty active so time to say hi to the locals.
I'm riding a 2003 Black LT with GPS I bought new, I've fitted it with a Baehr intercom, Uniden 5 watt UHF, PIAA 1100X, XL JPegs, Uni-go, bluetooth for the phone and a few other home brewed mods.
Question - does anyone in Aus have the latest GPS mapping, and if so, what version is it and the cost would be great if you know it.
I'll be at the Motorcycle Show on Sunday (gotta go listen to Charlie Boorman) if you are around.

G'day Daza, sounds like you've got yourself a nice ride.
In relation to your question, it depends upon the type of GPS system you are running... In relation to the BMW Navigator (I or II, which is the waterproof and BMW badged Garmin StreetPilot), the latest version of Mapsource CityNavigator is v6...you can only buy v5 off the shelf however, they then send you v6 as a separate disc (some retailers have this extra disc at point of sale). Having recently purchased this, I can say that it retails for between $370 and $450 depending upon who you buy it from... As for software for the OEM BMW system (the one built into the ride running off CD in saddlebag) I couldn't tell you but no doubt a quick call to one of the dealers would make you wiser.
Regard and welcome,
Daza

Hi Ian,
I have the Nav 1 as far as I know, anyway it is the BMW GPS fixture with the CD drive in the left pannier. I also have a Garmin Ique M5 that I use when I travel interstate which I recently upgraded to Aus V6 and was super impressed with the map coverage compared to my BMW GPS. The BMW version has very little other than highways once you clear the city. So.... I thought I'd throw the feelers out and see if anyone has a later version than me.
My BMW Navigation Software is 2002/01 and the map version CD is 2003 Version 6.0
Interestingly, the CD also has "Tele Atlas" and "Siemens VDO" on the cover.

Hi Daz,
Is this the GPS that you have?
http://www.bmwlt.com/gallery/files/1/7/8/gps1.gif
If so, then read this thread (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1740) for details on that particular GPS, and read this thread (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1079) for details on how to get updated map software. I know newer US and European maps are available, so there must be Australian updates as well. Also, I upgraded my map CDs a couple years ago, and the new ones had a whole lot more detailed info than the older ones.
BTW, do you have the original manuals that came with that GPS system? Another Aussie rider, Brian (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/member.php?u=5622), has the same unit but has no manuals at all.

Thanks Ken,
Yep.... that's the one I have. I called the local dealer this morning and asked about the latest Australian Mapping.... I'm sure it went straight into the "too hard" basket, he had no idea and said he will try to get back to me. Not gonna hold my breath waiting for that call.....
Yes, I have the manual for it if Brian is still looking.

Daz,
If you don't have any luck with your dealer, may I suggest that you give Southbank BMW in Melbourne a call. The guys on the parts desk are excellent and I have no doubt if they can't answer you immediately, they WILL get back to you about it...
Cheers mate,
Ian

Daz,
the GPS you have is the same as mine.
It is a VDO/Dayton unit.
if you want maps for these things are easy to get, buy them here
www.wowwicked.com.au
about $500 bucks worth

Thanks Dez,
Went to the web site but couldn't find the mapping, I'll give them a call tomorrow, looks like they only exist in WA and the NT.
Appreciate the tip, not sure that I want it $500 worth though......

They are in Qld also, we have one here in Townsville and there is plenty in Brisbane.
You got to give them a call about the cd's. I dropped by the townsville store a few months ago and got a price and they had them in stock.
After i picked myself up off the floor when they told me the price, i left very dis-heartened.

Yep, my GPS is a VDO-Dayton unit, except that I'm using a custom screen. It is the upgrade to the Carin units. It's also the same as they use in the BMW cars, so sometimes the maps and software are listed that way.
The Carin 520 has the black & white screen and is equivalent to the VDO-Dayton MS3100. It's what came on some LTs from BMW. The Carin 522 has the larger color screen and is equivalent to the VDO-Dayton MS5000. It has been fitted to some LTs using an after market oddments box cover made by a car dealer in Germany.
FWIW, the map CDs are cheaper and easier to get here in the States, but I've been having a tough time trying to get upgraded operating software. The manufacturer doesn't sell direct, and the after market shops are pretty clueless.

The third CD down looks like the correct one for your GPS. It should contain all the maps that you need. You buy it once, then put it in and forget about it (until the next regular map update comes out).
The second CD down has the C-IQ system. Basically, it's a subscription service where they send you free CD updates, then you have to call a number and "activate" the specific maps that you need for a specific time period. It's useful if you live in one area, but occasionally travel to farther places. I'm not sure that it's compatible with your GPS though.
Sorry to be so wordy, but I did a lot of research into these systems when I set mine up several years back, and more recently when I was also looking for updates. Hope it helps.

Some more to the story....
I remembered one of the guys at work has a Series 5 BMW car with GPS whilst trying to nod off last night. So.... grabbed him this morning and dragged him down to his car to have a look at the CD, it was a Version 10, about 12 months old. It said all the right things so I borrowed it for a few minutes... and tried it in the bike tonight... works like a charm, so now all I have to do is find some nice BM car driver with Version 12 (the latest) and make friends....

Going for a Ulysses run on Sunday (if I can convice SWMBO to give me a day pass :D ) doing a run out to Wisemans Ferry for smoko and lunch at Road Warriors with youngest daughter hopefully. Give those young sportsbike whippersnappers a bit of what for with the LT  <cue rocking chair sound effect and Yorkshire accent "Back when I was lad.....">

G'Day Chris,
The groups heading to Brooklyn on the 10th of December for a coffee, I'll probably be along for the ride with a mate on his LT. Our ride calendar is here - www.bluemountains-ulysses.com (http://www.bluemountains-ulysses.com/) take a look and maybe we can hook up sometime. I will be updating the calendar in about two weeks time with the rides planned for Jan/Feb/Mar as well.

Hi Daz.
didn't have a chance to get back to you beforehand.
Did you do you're Brooklyn ride on the weekend?
I took a couple of boys from work on a run on Sunday from the city to Windsor, then through Pitt Town to the Ferry, up Wisemans Ferry Road through Central Mangrove and back down the old road.
Stopped at Pie in the Sky on the off chance, but no other Lt'ers there.
Forgot how bumpy the Wisemans road is, but the LT handled it nicely, I was lot better off than the Ducati & Yamaha boys.images/icons/icon12.gif
Was hoping LT Pete could join me for a run, but he didn't make it.
Anyway, maybe another time..
