Here is one of my favorite photos from my recent trip to Alaska:

It was taken with a Canon EOS 1DS MarkII and a 28-300mm image stabilizing lens at 300mm.
Here is some of the EXIF data for that image:
197I1606.jpg
2007:06:12 16:11:05
Focal length: 300.0 mm
Lens: 28.0 to 300.0 mm
1/800 sec, f/10
Mode: Program
ISO: 400
AF mode: AI Servo AF
White balance: Auto
Flash: Off
File size: 179KB
Image size: 1500 x 1000
The image size and file size are of the processed image I used for this post. The embedded photograph is 800X533. The native image size for the 1Ds MkII is actually 16 megapixel or 4992 x 3328. I always shoot in RAW format so that I can process the JPEGs later. Generally I use BreezeBrowser (http://www.breezesys.com) for quick and easy RAW processing and Adobe (http://www.adobe.com) PhotoShop (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/) for more critical processing.
You will note some image blur in the birds wings, which helps to convey motion. The picture could have been taken at a higher shutter speed to stop the wings, but it would have required a larger aperture, blurring the background even more. I also could have chosen a higher ISO setting, keeping the aperture at the same setting, but that would introduce more noise.
There are always lots of choices to be made among lens, aperture, ISO and shutter speed. It is always a matter of personal choice. Go out and experiment and share your results.
While Canon cameras are well known for their low noise, I still prefer ISO 200 whenever possible as it will give the best possible noise, speed and dynamic range combination of any speed.
