Here is one of my favorite photos from my recent trip to Alaska:

Click on it or a larger version.

http://www.prades.net/alaska2007/day12/HTML/197i1606_std.jpg (http://www.prades.net/alaska2007/day12/197I1606.jpg)
It was taken with a Canon EOS 1DS MarkII and a 28-300mm image stabilizing lens at 300mm.

Here is some of the EXIF data for that image:
197I1606.jpg
2007:06:12 16:11:05
Focal length: 300.0 mm
Lens: 28.0 to 300.0 mm
1/800 sec, f/10
Mode: Program
ISO: 400
AF mode: AI Servo AF
White balance: Auto
Flash: Off
File size: 179KB
Image size: 1500 x 1000

The image size and file size are of the processed image I used for this post. The embedded photograph is 800X533. The native image size for the 1Ds MkII is actually 16 megapixel or 4992 x 3328. I always shoot in RAW format so that I can process the JPEGs later. Generally I use BreezeBrowser (http://www.breezesys.com) for quick and easy RAW processing and Adobe (http://www.adobe.com) PhotoShop (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/) for more critical processing.

You will note some image blur in the birds wings, which helps to convey motion. The picture could have been taken at a higher shutter speed to stop the wings, but it would have required a larger aperture, blurring the background even more. I also could have chosen a higher ISO setting, keeping the aperture at the same setting, but that would introduce more noise.

There are always lots of choices to be made among lens, aperture, ISO and shutter speed. It is always a matter of personal choice. Go out and experiment and share your results.

While Canon cameras are well known for their low noise, I still prefer ISO 200 whenever possible as it will give the best possible noise, speed and dynamic range combination of any speed.

Great idea for a forum and a wonderful first pic from you.

It might be me but clicking on it gives me an image not found on this server message.

Love that shot of the gull with the dragon fly, Randy. Good capture.

So here's a question for you. Did you keep a lens mounted on your body while riding? I know you brought at least two big lenses on your trip, the 28-300 and the 100-400. You were on some pretty harsh roads, bumpy too I would think. I'm wondering if you kept a big lens on the camera, or whether you pulled the lens completely for traveling. My 100-400 is my favorite lens, but I worry about all that weight torquing the lens mount while riding. Any comments there?

Here's my obligatory shot whilst on a motorcycle trip. This is at Morrow Bay on the weekend of David Taylor's Cambria gathering.

Very nice!

I ended up keeping the 1Ds with the 28-300 mounted in the tank bag of the GS for the entire trip. The only way to be ready to take a picture that comes up in front of you is to be ready to shoot at that moment. I really don't worry too much about the mount on the 1Ds, because of the construction of the chassis. That and the weather sealing are two reasons I really appreciate the pro bodies and lenses. I am not sure how the smaller bodies like the 10D, 20D, etc. would do, with the lens and body properly supported I would think they would do fine. I did lay several layers of cotton terrycloth in the bottom of the tank bag.

Thanks, Randy. That's encouraging. While the smaller bodies aren't built as strong, they're also lighter which probably reduces the problem. Besides, I only need my 20D to keep working until they get the autofocus issues worked out of the 1DMkIII. ;)

Ok, since we're sharing bird pics -

http://www.davidkari.com/BarHarbor07/BH07/ME7_5171.jpg

Taken at Seawall on Mt. Desert Island near Bar Harbor, ME. Canon EOS 20D with a Canon 70-300IS lens at 300, F/5.6, shutter speed 1600, ISO 100. Honestly, it was pure luck, I usually blow the birg in flight shots completely. :)
