In 2004, experience said that Nextel was almost useless. Today, I don't know, but I'm with Verizon now and problems have been very few.

Definitely Verizon. #1 rated for coverage by Consumer Reports, and works great for me.
I previously had PacBell/ATT/Cingular. I don't care how many companies they merged, it still sucked for national coverage.

More important than the provider, be sure and get a tri-mode phone. Many places in the boonies still have analog service only. Get an up-to-date digital only phone and you are out of luck. I was just on an ATV excursion on Grand Mesa and my tri-mode phone was the only one that had service. The Analog mode eats the batteries quick though, so don't leave it on.

+1 on this. You can buy a digital phone but it will have limited coverage.
My wifes' is tri-mode and mine is digital and we use hers in the boonies.

Verizon has been the best for me. I've used it all over the coutry from Seattle to San Diego, Bar Harbor, Maine to Tampa, FL, and a whole bunch of places in between.

Go rent a satellite phone for your trip. It will work ANYWHERE.

A bit spendy, but when stranded or injured, its cheap.

Go for T-Mobile BlackBerry. Not only phone but you can also access internet to get to bmwlt forum as what I do now.I was at BMW Motarrad Days in Garmisch Germany. It worked there too. Currently writing this from Turkey by Greek Islands.
