Pulled into my brother's drive way and parked. My brother mentioned that my rear tire looked almost flat. But bike on center stand and gaged the rear tire it measured 8psi. Inspected tire for foreign objects none found. Used his air compressor to inflate the tire when I removed the air chuck from the tire, air escaped rapidly from the valve stem upon further inspection found that the center core ( part with the threads) came out in my hand. I have never heard of this type failure and wonder if any one else has had a similar occurence?
The tire is in need of replacing which I will do this week, Metz 880 with about 13000mi.

Yep, it's happened to several folks. That thread at the bottom of the "similar thread" list below wuz prolly one of the early ones. A search on 'valve stems' might turn up more. Popular suggestion is to replace the stems with metal ones.
You got great mileage outta that Metzler. More than most folks do, I'm sure. HTH.

Thats why there is a valve stem tool wired to my guage (road use not the big shop guage)

at the end of a ride, noticed the rear end was a little wobbly. Looked just slightly low and after filling, same problem. Had the valve stem replaced by the local friendly Honda dealer and I was off. He is really courting me....... Actually gave me a GW to ride while he fixed the tire. Smart businessman.

I had that happed to me too. The valve stem should be replaced at every tire change. Some shops don't replace them unless you ask. If you do your own tire changes you should replace it every time.

My rear valve stem has been slowing leaking for some time and I just bought a pair of metal valve stems from O'Reilly's Camel 30-445's for 4.99. They'll go in on wednesday next time I'm close to the shop that put my last new tire on.

Yes, I had to replace mine about a month ago. I discovered the rear tire was flat one morning and when I tried to put air in the valve stem, it kept leaking out around the core. I took it back to the person who put my new tire on and he "fixed" it.

This is a problem which has been occuring for a long time, I remain convinced that BMW bought a bad batch of valve stems:

This is not just a matter of old valve stems not being changed at tire changes, these are defective valve stems.
No one has ever done a survery to try to establish what year groups of bikes have experienced valve stem failure but it is the BMW OEM stem that has this failure mode.
In most of the world, valve stems just don't fail like this.
