One of my business associates rides a -99 LT. I met him as he was on his way to Nordkapp, Norway (the Northernmost point of Europe).

When he told me he got rear-ended the previous week at first I could no believe that he was there on his way North.

He was riding on a typical two-lane highway when he saw an oncoming car pulling over to the side of the road and letting the following cars go by. Right after that the driver made a left turn across the lane my friend was approaching. He braked firmly and the bike slowed enough for the car to go in front of him with a margin of about 5 meters (15 feet). The driver was an elderly lady who just looked firmly to the direction she was driving.
Just when my friend had let go of the brakes and was ready to accelerate he heard a loud “bang” behind the bike and he was tossed to the pillion seat as he simultaneously lost grip of the handlebars. A Volvo V40 had hit him in the rear and sent him and the bike forward with a speed hard enough not to fall down. After two or three seconds my buddy was able to reach the handlebars again and bring the bike to a controlled halt. The Volvo had braked quite hard and it’s nose was down so obviously it must have hit the rear tire (and the tip of the muffler) hard. The hood of the car was wrinkled, front license plate lost and the grille and plastic bumper were broken as well.

When my buddy called the emergency squad and told that a motorcycle had been rear-ended the duty person asked right away what the status of the rider was. When she heard that it was the rider who made the call she was quite relived…

Anyway, I took some pictures of his bike and the only visible damage is on the tip of the muffler. Also some very small scratches on the rear panel. I was curious if the bike felt any different but he claimed that it was just like it used to be.
I bet if he had had a HID lights in the front and an extra (let alone flashing) brake light in the rear this accident could have been avoided. His bike is stock in the respect of lights and I recommended him to consider the luggage rack with extra brake light as well as low beam HID at the minimum…
I all cases he was a lucky fellow to walk away and not even have his bike fall down…

Glad to hear your friend is OK. Has he checked out his Final Drive...that sounds like alot of force applied to the rear of his bike, I can't imagine that nothing was damaged.

I would think the exhaust system needs a close looking at.

You are right Don, but isn't it a one piece so it will be changed to new anyway and covered by the Volvo's insurance.
BTW, when my friend went and showed the bike to the insurance company inspector he at first did not notice anything peculiar with the exhaust pipe. He thought it was like that from the factory...
