Witnessed A Crash Today!

Today, I was riding to the shop to have a new rear tire installed and coming down the highway (towards me) a young kid on a GX'er wheelies and goes all the way over crashing and grinding and flipping!!! :eek:

Kid only has on short pants...FLIP FLOPS and was probably traveling 60-70 mph (in third gear when I checked his bike after the crash). Before I know it a bike and a kid with almost no clothes on are coming at me, parts flying all over the place, sliding and tumbling down the road. Gosh...it was terrible.
Especially the sounds of grinding.

I turned around quickly but safely to assist and he jumped up and was literally out of his mind. Running around -- hurting from the road rash and in shock -- screaming and cursing. Got him to settle down and turned the ignition off on the bike. It was totally trashed.

Amazingly enough, he had no broken bones...but man was he covered in road rash... ALL OF HIS TOES just ground down "to the white meat"... :eek:
Ankles, Arms and legs too.

He said he was a new rider and "I wasn't doing anything crazy...I swear! My clutch stuck and it just flipped over." That part was kinda funny in its own way 'cause the driver behind him said he was riding a wheelie and it came all the way over.

Sure made me feel glad to be wearing boots and protective gear!!!!!

I came up on my second motorcycle accident in about a month on the fourth of July... both accidents were almost identical. In both cases it was not the motorcycle rider's fault. In both cases, a vehicle turned left if front of them. In both cases, no helmets, or other safety gear. In both cases, a couple was laying on the ground lifeless.

I have heard that the male rider from the accident I saw about a month ago is still in critical condition from a head injury.

People wonder why their son is dead a month after they've bought him a 150 horsepower motorcycle for his 18th birthday...

Sorry you had to see that, Jack; and I am glad the kid was given an opportunity to learn something and move on, instead of 6 feet under.

Yea...I was kinda thinking the same thing as he was running around screaming, "I'm a new rider...I wasn't goofing off..I'm a new rider..." And the whole time I'm thinking, "You're a new rider and you're on a bike that would have won a Superbike Championship bone stock just 10 years ago." Way too much of everything for a brand new rider. Just chews 'em up and spits 'em out!

But, you know...I'm sure he's learned a valuable lesson AND has a LOT to be thankful for. Although, I am sure wherever he is, he is asking for PAIN MEDS!

There's been talk of a graduated licensing structure similar to what they have in Europe for just the reasons you mention Jack. I've had several people bring up the subject of getting a new bike in the last couple months, and each time I have tried to stress not getting a new 600 like they wanted (well 1 guy wanted a 1000 but he's not the sharpest tack in the drawer) but rather a nice 250 or even better, a dirt bike. There needs to be more guidelines put in place to control access to these new superbikes, cause they are just that, super.

Kind of like the tank slapper that I witnessed several weeks ago. The kid told the CHP he was doing 65-70. Um, yeah! Maybe when he hit the F'G pavement he was! Try more like 90! You know, I've heard of those "sticky clutches" on those super crotch rockets!....Or is it the insane riders with the lead right wrist? Whatever....
....I'm sure he's learned a valuable lesson AND has a LOT to be thankful for....
Hey, Jack, call me cynical, BUT, do you think a kid riding a wheelie on a rocket ship, in flip flops, is really capable of learning anything?

BTW, did he have an endorsement and MSF training?

Don't know about the endorsement, but he did say, "Man, I just moved down here from Maryland and I haven't even had time to get my liscense changed yet." Betcha he didn't have the endorsement.

And...hopefully, yes, he may be able to learn from this 'cause I know a person (I won't state his name :o ) on this forum who crashed real bad when "he" was about 19, drag racing with cheap tennis shoes on! Tore those suckers off my...errr His feet, totally! Bike fell on him and burned him badly. He was so drunk he didn't even know what day it was...and today he is a safe rider, life is changed and "he" even pastors a large church.

Stranger things happen! ;)

Hope he recovers and learns a lesson or two from that.

Wonder if its the weather, phase of the moon or what. Went riding today and for the first time in a while folks drove like I was invisible, got run out of my lane 3 times. Got a Remus pipe so they can't say they didn't hear me. Got Moto lights so they can't say they didn't see me, or maybe they weren't looking. Made it home safe and sound. Bat the thunder storm home, maybe that'll clear the air and folks' minds.
