View Full Version : Smitty's!!

Sometime back, a discussion centered around the 'Q' places in Lockhart, Elgin, Taylor and points east of IH-35. I hadn't heard of Smitty's in Lockhart, butt have eaten at Kreutz and Blacks there.

Well, last week-end, the Wall Street Journal had an article about good foods and the places that make the best of certain categories. Given the author presented 'his' preference, I thought it appropos that he selected Smitty's Meat Market in Lockhart as having the best 'Q' in the country! I can't argue with him, cuz I ain't been there --- yet!!

Butt, don'tcha think we oughta have a RTF (Feast) there one of these times? We still oughta do the Stagecoach Inn over in Salado, and maybe do it sometime this month after the weather settles down. And then maybe Smitty's in mid-August so's not to interfere with CCR preparations and such.

Anybody have any heartburn with these suggestions. I'm just the roster keeper and kitchen alerter, so am always open to other ideas. Lemme know.

No heartburn here.

I took Chuck to the new Hard 8 in Coppell last night. He woke up this morning and said he had meat poisoning, I know I was seriously OD'ed meself. It took both of us to get the leftovers up the stairs to his apt.

Grif,
On Monday my grandson was born... is it too soon for his "first visit" to "Hard 8"??

Wish I'd known you guys were goin... then maybe you guys woulda had time to brung me a pork chop that needed eatin'.. =P I'm kinda in withdrawl!!!

I'm down in the SE corner of Tarrant County.. and would loved to introduce you to my new grandson.

Guess I'm going to see if I can break my grandson out and go find the Hard 8... I wonder if I'll get a pic of him similar to Grif's moniker?

Hey, Deacon - I heard the owner/chef/chief bottle washer at Smitty's say that they're basically basic - Angus beef; they tie their own sausage; and chicken. Some simple sides. And, if you ax, they do have sauce in the back, under the counter - butt you do gotta ax. Also, sez while most places do their beef (ribs and brisket) longer hours, he does 'em on a hot fire for four hours and that's it. Apparently has a similar setup to the Hard 8, in that you point out whatcha want on your plate while you're standin' at the pit.

And he also said - he do a mean pork chop!! Leetle pricey, butt worth it (I quote).

Oh, yeah - and said he's been slammed with calls from all over the country since the WSJ article. Folks want him to ship stuff. He can't, cuz his license only allows in-store retail. Dude wuz rather humbled that Smitty's got picked as best in country!! (Yeah, I know - one article; one author....).

Damn, now I'm droolin'!! May have to make a run over there Saturday and see if the article wuz spot on!! :p

Monte is thinkin' about riding over also, so we'll prolly meet near 281/32 and take 12 thru San Marcos and head to Smitty's. Y'all come!!!

Caveat - weather is a gamble these days, and if it's just spittin' and spewin' on the weather web page, I'm good to go. If it's nasty like last week or so, I'm calling Domino's!! :p :D

BTW - I'll post up Smitty's addy here in a short.

I don't remember ever loving my kid's as much as I love those grandbabies. Then again, they haven't reached teen years yet.
We're taking our 14 month old to the circus Sunday!

You talkin' 'bout the inside, or the outside??? 16 quarters for the outside (actually, 20, cuz the changer kept the last dollars worth!! ), and one stoked up vacuum bag for the inside, plus 7 10-second firings off the Glade can!!!

OH, wait - vacuum bag and Glade stuff wuz for the ole Blue truck. Me and a coupla the pups had ridden down to the mailbox Friday and they do this happy, happy ear-flappin', toss a pound-a-hair thang, after playing king of the mountain on the bucket seat. We're walkin' next time!!! ;)
