Does anyone remember there being a recall on a throttle cable problem with the 2001 LT's ?

There are times when I feel like it takes both hands to crank on the throttle.

There was a TSB issued in February 2003 concerning stiff throttle action (#8 on the summary list), but this has expired now (i.e. you'll have to pay unless you have a generous dealer). A summary of all known TSB's is in the HoW (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/faq.php?faq=how_troubleshooting#faq_how_faq_tsgen) (k.4) and they are also listed in the Recalls (http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/faq.php?faq=recalls_faq_recalls#faq_service_faq_bulletinlist) section of the drop-down Technical menu at the top of the page.

About 3 months after purchasing my 2002, the dealer replaced the stock cables with new ones that got progressively worse over time.

Last month I asked my NEW Dealer, Miller BMW in Tallahassee FL to check them and he convinced BMW/NA to warranty the cables, I paid the labor as the bike was at 77,000 miles.

The new cables are 2005 part numbers with new lower throttle grip housing.

The down tubes from the housing turn at a greater radius and dramatically reduce friction.

Have a conversation with your Dealer, who knows what could happen.

Phil, a bunch of folks recently have posted about a dramatic improvement in throttle action after lubrication of the throttle cables. If I remember correctly, someone wrote that BMW recommends AGAINST lubeing the cables, so it definitely is not a procedure to be done on a bike under warrantee. But the testimonials have been impressive. Not sure HOW one lubricates BMW cables (on an older Kaw it involved an oil filled baggie tied tightly to the end of the cable and inverted), but a question on the forum would bring replies. Good luck.

Phil, I would go ahead and replace the cables. It is not difficult and all the part numbers and directions are on this site. If you have been fightiing the throttle for a while the cables have probably been stressed so much that it is a matter of time before they break. Don't ask me how I know. As far as the lower handlebar cover used for the new cables, look at a new one at your dealer or there is a pic on the site I remember seeing and do the modification to your lower cover yourself.
