I was out for a morning ride this fine fourth of July here in Iowa. I had been winding through the lovely back roads of Vanburen county. No one much around. No cars just beautiful green fields and farms and feel of the LT humming along and working the curves easily and smoothly. In other words, I was in motorcycle heaven (is there another one?). Towards the end of the ride as I was coming back into town I saw another lucky soul on a bike approaching me. It was a guy on a Harley. Ususally you do the biker wave. You know that low gesture with your left hand. That kind of cool wave we give each other as we pass to acknowledge the secret brotherhood of those that love motorcycling. But today it was different. We must have both been feeling the pure elation of being on nice bikes and enjoying the cool morning air and the whole fabulous experience. Instead of doing the low salute, we both almost silmultaneously and spontaneously reached our hands out to the side towards each other as if we were going to give each other high fives on the way by. And we held that as we passed. It was a true gesture of, I don't know what, just a biker's connection given from one human being to another for a fleeting moment that seemed to say, "hey, dude, ain't life grand." Know what I mean?
