To Fast for me!

We are taking 5 outside the shop and I hear a bike lighting the wick,
(The setting, Thunder in the Valley is going on up the road, so 10,000 bikes have passed today) this guy has to be really grinding it to get me to stand up and watch.
Jake (our resident drag bike pilot) says "160 mph" as it sails past.
5 minutes later the bike has turned around and pulled into the lot, it's Kevin. I ask him how fast he was going "speedo said 176mph".
Then I remind him that this is not the section of 56 where he got nabbed 5 years ago doing 140mph (lost licence for 3 years) that is a gorge with no intersecting roads driveways or people, which worked in your favor in court. You get nicked doing that here your going to jail, to fast for even me.

Your post serves as a reminder to me, not only about the legal consequences of triple digit speeds but, of the physics consequences.

A bike is, in essence, a large gyroscope that more and more "stable" as the rotational speed of the wheel increases. Stability being the intrinsic nature to stay upright. The ability to quickly make the bike lean (turn) and avoid a suddenly appearing obstacle such a car pulling out of the shop driveway is virtually impossible at the speeds you describe.

Darwin's theory is only held in abeyance by consistent application of sound judgement.

Had my Seca into the 130's once, just so I could see how fast I could make her stop at that speed. Even with a hand and foot full of brake, it took several seconds before I could even feel them grip.

This was a long stretch of straight, freshly paved road. That experiment taught me to keep it in the double digits only...

I'm glad that I learned how long a even STOP truly takes, and I am glad it actually took the distance it did. Since I was Y&S (young and stupid) at the time - if she had stopped quickly, I might have convinced myself that it's (marginally) safe to haul a$$ like that every once in a while!

Thats almost 3 miles per minute, okay on the wide open salt flat, not good in this terrain.

Forget the ride to jail and all the physical things you're subjected to for 24 hours. Knowing your bike will be dragged off to the impound lot later has to really bite :mad:

Later at the impound lot, Beavis and Butt-head will have your key and they will be ducktaping your bike's throttle open and placing bets on when the engine stops making noise. :eek:
