Just bought a GS sheep skin cover for my K12lt seat (fits perfect)
What do regular users of this type of cover do in the rain?
Does it smell if left wet or is it fine to just leave out in all weathers?

In Cuba you get a downpour that would be like wahsing it. Then it would dry in less than half an hour!
In the UK we usually get drizzle (except for lately, we seem to go in for the downpours - without the sun after of course)

I used to leave mine on all the time in PA (didn't have one in Cuba with me)
Used to have a whole skin that ran long up onto the tank for winter, would just fold it back and tuck to cover my crotch.

Beads are great for the rain, they keep your bottom much dryer. I made my set from an $8 car seat cover. It took some time to cut and tie, but they work just the same as a $40 single piece. One car seat cover will make two pieces for the LT (rider/passenger).

With gortex leathers, I am not worries about getting wet from the cover.
But will it smell or rot it to leave it in the rain?

Dittos on the "dead skunk". I use mine in the winter and beads in the heat. The 'boys' will appreciate it.

Great, just great.
It just got soaked outside, so I did one last look here to find it was NOT ok to leave in the rain.

Next question - whats the best way to get rid of the skunk smell?!

If it smells like a skunk then stick it in a plastic bag and sell it to a dope head with a free pack of Rizla, easy money.

I set the clips so it is easy to pop off if Mother Nature is threatening. Mine is over five years old and still doing great. Moved it from the LT to the GT. When it is really hot, I let it get wet 'cause I like the wet butt feeling if it is hot enough!

If you remove it and let it dry completely it will be fine. No smell and cleaner.

I wouldn't want to leave a wet sheepskin on my leather seats to dry...definitely a good way to ruin good leather.

OK,

If it smells like a skunk, it must be to the 1-butane-Thiol, which is the chemical sulfur compound which is the source of the horrible odor in "skunk juice"...I know you just needed to know that!!!!!

Obviously, if it smells like a skunk, it must not be a duck...probably doesn't swim like a duck either!

Go purchase a large ZipLoc bag, insert the 'skin' into the bag along with charcoal granules inside a couple socks and let it sit for about a week...follow up with an application of "Helmet Fresh" (pump spray) from Cycle Gadgets... let dry, and brush the 'skin' free of contaminants...it might just work! And while you're at it, try the PLEXUS and "sliks" for inside the helmet...great products also from CYCLE GADGETS...yes, I use all three products...very pleased...do remember to remove the PLEXUS from plastic surfaces using micro-fiber hand towels available from various sources!

Mine only smells while it is wet. After it dries it is fine. I try not to let it get wet though simply because it isn't good for the leather seat.

On ourlast trip (3400 miles) we had rain for half a day and I removed the sheep skin. My rear didn't like being without the skin so I was very glad when it quit raining and I could put it back on.

Throw it in a sink with tomato and lemon juice and stir it around. :stir: (REALLY)

Then, wring it out over crushed ice in a highball glass - add some Cuban rum with a sprig of mint. Drink up. I call it a "Sheep Dipmopolitan".

Of course if your sheepskin was white it will now be PINK!

I'm curious, c00k1e, just what is a smart man like you (obviously smart since you ride an LT) doing in a hell-hole like Cuba? I've been there twice to visit my starving family and I would never live there. Just curious.

I am really wondering why any one would be putting their nose right where they put their butt on any thing especially a sheepskin that has to absorb only God knows how much sweat & perhaps a vapor or two? :0)

And then discuss it in a public forum at length.

Seriously, This place where I bought 2 sheep skins has answers to the posed questions. http://www.alaskaleather.com/buttpads.html

BTW both skins I own have gotten wet and I never felt the need to get a good whif of them wet or dry. And I did not notice any smell from a distance.

Perhaps if the sheep skin smell is a regular problem, a change of diet is in order.
