I ride my LT 1000 miles a week, yes 1000. Presently has 77000 miles on it. My question, are their any after market plug wires out there? $45.00 a piece is a bit high I think. I might also add the bike has never been in the shop for any reason.

I guess the first question is:

I've never heard of the LT's OEM wires failing or causing problems, but it is true that any plug wire degrades over time.

No aftermarkets that I know of - but for $200.00 I would think a DYI or "custom" job is in order for a fraction of the price...

...or just take the OEM's with you and search around an import car parts store for similar - there's more than a few 4 cylinder BMW cars out there, and if they are a bit long just gently tuck in the excess with some black nylon wire ties. Sharp bends are not good. :bmw:

Parts is parts - even if they are not officially blessed by BMW, chances are good you can find some quality replacements.

Keep 'em humming.;)

(We also like you to fill out your profile to know more about you, we're a pretty friendly group on the whole - and you might find some fellow LT'ers near you.)

for what its worth, when I did my "shopping" for splitfire triple platinum plugs this week, I noticed that splitfire also makes high performance wires, and they are a lot cheaper than $55 a strand...

might be worth a peek

I know I have a plug wire that is bad as it arcs to the head but since then I have surrounded all the plug wires with that cheap wire loom material and it seems to have stopped that problem. However I still would like to replace them as well. I gave up searching a few months ago when I started asking questions about it and turned up that the plug wires seemed to have some sort of special ...blah blah blah don't remember, and then I figured I would wait for someone else to experiment. I agree that 45-50 dollars a piece is expensive when it probably only cost about a nickel to make.

Please let us know if you find something suitable

You could buy some slightly used ones through Ebay for 1/2 the price of a new one.($28.00)
I found some corrosion built up on #2 spark plug on the connector, so my intension is to replace the wire and reseat the caps with a dielectric grease.

I figure you are paying out $50 or so a week in gasoline it you are riding that much.

If you need new wires, think of each $45 plug wire as a week of riding...

Good luck in your search.
