Need your help. I recently purchased an 05 LT with 5,000 mi. from HD dealer. (don't ask) First trip out my wife and I noticed the smell of oil as we slowed down. It also felt like the clutch was slipping off the line. I recently had the bike serviced for the 6,000 mi. service. So I called the dealer and asked if he over filled it? What's up? He says it sounds like the rear main seal. This would be covered under the warranty but if the oil ruined the clutch it was not covered because it was a ware item. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be appreciated. I go in on Friday for the dealer to check it out. Thanks.

I dont know about the '05 for sure, but the pre '05 models had a habit of having leaks in the timing chain cover. Oil would leak and blow back on the #1 cylinder exhaust header. Look on the front of the motor and see if you see oil down on the bottom of the timing chain cover. If you do, look back at cylinder number one exhaust and see if it has oil coating on it. Sounds like you are probably still under warranty, so not a big issue, but a lot of work to fix correctly if you have to pay for it or do it on your own.

My 05 LT had the rear seal replaced two weeks after I bought it. That was only two months ago. My clutch was not affected, but they told me the clutch would be replaced if oil was on it. Anyways, the part has to come off to replace the seal, so you should only have to pay for the part.

I dont think they should expect you to pay for the clutch if it is oil soaked... if it is oil soaked, it failed from the oil, not wear.

Part of the normal pre-delivery check from a HD dealer is to induce an oil leak.

When I was dealing with the warranty stuff at M/C dealerships, the clutch would also be replaced because the only reason it failed was because of a leaking seal which itself would be covered under warranty in the first place. Besides, if the fork seals leaked on to the brake pads, they would cover them.
