Just purchased my first bmw , a 85 k100rt. Awesome machine except if really makes my legs hot.......I have to move my legs out beyond the lowwer fairing to keep cool; is this a common thing with these old bike or what? I'm getting to the point now that when it's above 85 I don't like to ride it, it's so annoying and unconfortable. Do most riders just remove the lowewrs in the summertime? yes, the fan works............

I never had an early K bike but I do remember people talking about heat with those bikes. Taking off the lowers would likely help some.

There have been heat shields made to divert the heat

I have an 85 K100RT as well and the best improvement I made for the leg heat problem was to add the air wings. I added upper and lower. Still not perfect but I was able to ride through the Tucson summers when I lived there and it don't get much hotter than that.

Most of the heat I feel on my K75 RT is from the tank. I have a BAGSTER tank bra on and that drops the surface temp by 15 to 20 degrees. Heat shields are hard to find for these bikes because they are so old.
You will find some good information at: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/kbmw/
Good luck with your K100. I really like my K75RT except for the heat. Living in Central Texas that is about 5 months out of the year that it is uncomfortable to ride.
I am thinking about going back to a Airhead for a play bike because of the heat on the K75.

There was a thread on KBMW recently that stated the guy who used to make the KGUARDS was out of business.

I searched and found his website. Said he was suspending production due to family health issues. The message was dated 2004.
I have interest in figuring out a way to move the KLT's fairing duct heat out further from the bike. My legs are fine if I keep them behind the fairing but the wife can't escape that heat from the duct.
Anyone have any tips please?
