What Gear Am I In?

I was returning from a 2000 mile trip and noticed that my gear indicator was displaying '0' instead of '5'. After a fuel stop, it went from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 and before I shifted into 5th, it went back to 0. Downshifting made no difference, but and occasional bump would produce a '4', but never the '5' which I was riding in. This is a 2006 LT and I would have thought it would have most of the bugs out of it by now. Anyone else had this experience or could point me to a starting point (other than the dealer)?
