thanks to everyone in advance for any help!
When I set the cruise on my 01 LT. sometimes it will set and sometimes it wont. The speed at which i set the cruise is not an issue. sometimes at 65 mph it will sometimes not. any ideas.
I am thinking maybe the throttle cables might need adjusting?

Mine has started doing similar. Works fine below 85 degrees. Any warmer and it tends to not want to set. I have found that if I'm in 5th gear, I can roll throttle all the way on a couple times, and it will work. Even hiway bumps will cut it off tho.
IF I remember, I roll throttle a couple times before I start if I know I'm going to need the cruise.
Works for now. Only been an issue in the last couple weeks for me, but look forward to hearing others ring in on solution.

I just fixed the same problem as you. It could be the same thing, but it may not. If you are going down the road and you lightly push downward towards the ground on your clutch handle and the CC engages consistently then you know its the microswitch in the handlebar at the clutch handle. If it is the microswitch then you can bend the little tab on it to make it engage the switch a little more. Requires a little disassembly of the left hand grip cluster of buttons and gadgets Many of us here have done this instead of taking it to the shop to have it fixed for more money than its worth.
But mine is a 99LT and I can't say that it is the same on your bike.

From memory, according to the service manual if the cruise randomly sets and quits try increasing the freeplay in the close cable slightly. NOTE: The close cable is the one closest to the driver while sitting on the bike.
The close cable operates a micro switch which disengages the cruise when you "roll-off" the throttle.
