Affixing patches to Leather jackets.

I've seen ads for adhesives that claim to work with embroidered patches and leather, and other ads for how to sew them on.

What is the BEST method for affixing a patch to a leather jacket?

Round patches probably present the least problem, so make sure you're talking about patches in the shape of an eagle, a motorcycle, wings, etc. I.e. sharp pointy sections.

On a riding leather jacket, and even on textile for that matter, I would use fabric glue. This would avoid piercing the leather or fabric.

You can easily find some. Just walk in to a fabric shop and ask one of the clerks there.

There are several types of glue. Just explain to them what you want to do. The glues are quite tenacious. If you later want to remove a patch that has been there a while, you may have a hard time not leaving residue.

So.. what would be the point of using glue over sewing? Just price?

I've taken my vests etc. to a local shop that does the sewing.. costs about $5.00 per patch..talking a large round type. Gets done while I wait if I call first and let them know I'm coming.

So.. what would be the point of using glue over sewing? Just price?

It's just a personal preference.

I wasn't factoring in price.

I use glue to avoid piercing the leather or textile.

It's also quicker.
I can place it exactly where I want it.
It's stays in place.

The finished result can often look better than sewn, especially if hand sewn ie to not pierce through the inner lining especially if it invloves Gore-Tex.

Over the years, I've used stitching as well as gluing many times for ski patrol uniforms, ski instructor uniforms etc. The patch doesn't care what holds it in place.

But everyone has preferences.
