View Full Version : Side Stand Extension

Since I have installed new shocks, the bike seems to be leaning at a more severe angle when on the side stand. I measured this AM about 20deg when on flat garage surface. My guess if it was loaded it might just keep going on over.
Is there an extension to add to the side stand. I did some search using "side stand extension" and came up with nothing on this site. Is it cut and weld or bolt on something to get a better angle, like 15 deg or less? Or just don't use the side stand?

Most riders have found that the attachments come off way too easy. Especially in the twisties.
You could always have a 2X4 block of wood, drill a hole through it and thread a thin cord, that you throw over your seat so that you don't forget it.
Just a thought!

I believe the reason BMW made the side stand shorter around 2001 (http://www.bmwlt.net/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=K1200LT&Number=82685&page=&view=&sb=&o=) was to prevent the opposite problem: the bike tipping onto its right side when parked on its side stand, for example after a gust of wind. I agree that it's alarming how far it leans but I've yet to hear of someone's bike tipping all the way over to the left, when parked on the side stand. So I'd say: don't worry about it. An extension may create more problems than it solves.

Thanks for your response. I will just watch where I put my foot when I use the side stand. Actually, if there is a slight slope to the place where I park it I usually put the foot on the uphill side and it sets it right.
Glad to hear its not a major issue.

If you'd like to trade, I have the longer sidestand on my 1999 LT and I'm looking for the shorter sidestand since lowering my LT.

Has anyone put an older side stand (pre 2003) on a 2005 LT? Will it fit the same mounting?

It's the same part number for both old and new. It will fit on either old or new bike. The original (pre 2002) stand is mounting interchangeable with the current, pre 2005 side stand. Current part number for both models is 46 53 7 666 943. The part number for the original (longer) side stand is 46 53 2 332 729.

I have to admit, when I got my LT I did not trust the sidestand at all. I used it only when fueling. But having read of no problems when used correctly (first gear, roll forward, make sure it is fully extended, watch where you park, etc.) I have come to trust it more. I still wonder what is holding up the bike sometimes as I approach from a distance, but it stays up!

I have a 99LT that I lowered one inch and after lowering it was too upright on the sidestand. I put on a sidestand from a 03 LT and got my lean back. The 09 and 03 LTs use the same sidestand, don't know about the 05.

i wish my bike leaned over more on the sidestand - i recently returned from a 5 day tour and was often frustrated that i could not park my bike on the side of the street in the parallel parking spaces - the curvature of the road made it impossible unless i turned the bike around (against traffic) and parked backwards
