This is just a simple poll. The Survey system is for more sophisticated surveys. This one does show up on the home page in the lower left.

After being entertained by negative reputation points a few times, I've learn to realize what a valuable tool this "feature" is. It gives yet another avenue for the cowards in this forum to type (anonymously, none-the-less) comments to me that I've yet to hear to my face. I especially like the profanity!!! Really adds a special touch. http://www.bigbikeworld.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif Actually, I'm quite impressed with the use of profanity in an anonymous message. I just don't understand how I can enrage some people so much online . . . and yet, nobody has approached with such discontent at 2 CCRs, and 2 other bmwlt.com-based events. Perhaps they just couldn't find me. Yea . . . that's it. http://www.r1-forum.com/gallery/images/smile.gif

Joe,
For the record, you have the #1 spot in complaints - which currently stands at more than double the number of complaints of the next 5 offenders COMBINED over the complete history of the site (eGroups, Yahoo, k1200lt.net, bmwlt.net, and now BMWLT.com). FWIW, I occupy #4 on that list.
If I had to hazard a guess, I believe the problem stems from your online persona's uncanny ability to come across like a pompous, egotistical, judgemental jerk. I've never met a person who has caused more people to call, email, or come up to me and say "he's a great guy in person, but on the site, he comes across like a complete ________". (fill in the blank with the derogatory expletive of your choice).

Joe,
Since you asked, I really don't know what to suggest. As you and I have discussed a few times in the past, if you were to take a good hard look at many of your replies, the broad brush swath of opinion you wield, along with your sometimes judgemental and insulting manner in which you express your opinions, I think you might find the root cause. Based on the many emails I have received regarding your behavior on the site, I would also suspect your seemingly inflexible stance on various topics, which seem to allow for no other viewpoint aside from your own, contributes to this perception.
If you are looking at other examples of how people have reacted to their place on the "complaint list", we can look to the rest of the top 10 list.
#2 has done a complete 180, took the criticism to heart, and done an incredible job changing that initial bad impression. This person now contributes in a very positive way and provides many golden nuggets of information.
#3 left the site. This person had a tendency to post erroneous information, and when called on it, would become combative and abusive. You don't argue the facts with supposition, wild guesses, and other incorrect assumptions with guys like Mark Neblett and David Shealey.
#4 was banned. I don't recommend threatening other members of this community and expect to remain part of it.
#5 - ME - I dropped what some of the old timers might refer to the "Old El Jeffe" personality. And even when some members have begged me to bring it back for certain instances, I have resisted and tried my best to remain the "kinder, gentler El Jeffe".
#6 has done the best job of changing of any of the "problem children". This person was on a rocket sled to earning a permanent ban and held the #1 spot for a very long time. After some gentle prodding and a couple face to face discussions, this person has become a model BMWLT.com citizen.
#7 was banned. Harassing female members and significant others of our members is not tolerated and will get you banned (and referred to your local D.A.)
#8 is now a reformed "problem child". You would never have guessed this person was ever a problem by the way he participates today.
#9 left the site. Well, maybe "asked to leave" is more appropriate. While this site likes to foster open and free expression, we do have rules and guidelines. If someone can't abide by them, it would be best for them to go elsewhere.
#10 is still a member, visits once and a while, but doesn't post much. And even though we have had many wonderful conversations over the years, this member (self admittedly) lacks the ability to control his emotions when behind the keyboard and has chosen to lurk instead of posting.

Tom,
Please explain when you "almost got banned once"? That wouldn't be the time you confused a network problems on your end with being banned, erroneously made a big stink about it to one of our moderators, and then apologized to him for being such a jerk about it after discovering your mistake?
Considering you were once one of the most vocal complainers to me regarding Joe's online behavior, I find it quite amusing that you are such pals now. I remember a phone conversation trying to cool you down from wanting to kick his ass when you finally met him. LOL!!!!

Jeff you have seriously lost your mind, you forget when I got my warning? and then from you? you ok my friend? if fact your words were you don;t give a flying fuck if I like it or not, some way to be when the board is darn near a subscription service at this point, also if your confusing the time I was screwing around with Joe and then you (remember when I said we should hog tie him when we meet him at STC (or whatever where my exact words at that point)- I once thought you had a sense of humor which I found out that all the power you have, you have lost any sense of humor. you are sadly mistaken about me disliking Joe ever in any way shape or form, remember Skippy this is a fun place, some of you forget that at times, take it to seriously and the place will loose out on some good members
in fact after I had first met you in Texas I thought you were a pretty decent fun loving type a fellow with a sense of humor, trust me Jeff I now know much better than that, you one person I won;t joke around with again, you just might take it the wrong way, Nothing wrong with that mind you, seeing how emotions are very hard to rear on a forum such as this. if you notice there are only a couple of folks I kid around with on here anymore, there is a reason for that,
Got to run, getting ready for some serious work for a couple day's then back to ga

Tom, I suggest you re-check your facts. You were never "almost" banned, not even close. In the instance you referring to, a moderator asked you to chill out and refrain from further participation in a flame war between Joe and another member. That same warning went not only to you, but to all of the participants in that particular flame. It seems you were the only one who had an issue with it.
Since you brought it up, and chose to put the incorrect context around my words to you regarding that incident, I'd like to clarify that my exact words were "I didn't give a flying fuck if you stayed or not" and that "participation in this community is 100% voluntary". However, that was only after you came whining to me about one of the moderators asking you to cool it, and after explaining to you TWICE that I felt that the moderator was right to intervene and that you were wrong to get involved in that flame war in the first place. Sort of like you getting involved in this thread, huh?

Yea...I have that profound effect on people that I meet IN PERSON. They either learn quickly that I take nothing seriously, and finally "get it". Or, they realize that I actually do say the things I type. Unlike most of the people that don't like me here online. I've yet to be approached at an event and have somebody say, "You know messenger13, you're a real jerk!". Naw . . . that would take a spine. Instead, they would rather PM the admins, call the 'el jeffe hotline', or slap me with negative reputation points, (*ew...shutter with fear*) and remain anonymous. Dag! If that isn't pathetic, I don't know what is.
On second thought. It's amusing, entertaining and fun. And that's why I stick around. http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/images/smilies/yesnod.gif

Jeff maybe we should drop this because you as well have twisted the facts here, although I did come to you, it was becasue I thought you knew me well enough to realize I was poking with that kid, second I wanted to get it clarified with that moderator so he would know I was poking with that kid and took nothing too seriously, the message I got was a warning that I would get banned and after I had posted I was done wiht that thread becuase no one had any thick skin, and you did say you did not give a flying fuck if I liked it or not. good attitude IMHO, (trust me I know where I stand here, or with anything that ever may arise between me and you. The one reason I will not joke around with you, keep in your power filled mind I like to kid around you know this you have met me, and also keep in mind not to take everything so seriously. I thought you were pretty good people still do not think to much otherwise than that, after all you did let me borrow a seat pad and if I liked it buy it, that was way cool, I don't forget stuff like that, ever. Outside of that, well screw it. It's just that simple.

Well Said Joey, very well said.
I've been online for many years now, back when usenet was just "usenet", (heck I can't even remember them stupid commands any more for posting to usenet on the unix box) I've ran a BBS system (remember them folks?) yea mine started with a 2400 baud modem (damnit man they were slow!) I actually used a 300 bps for a while to download the fido-net and usenet feeds. 9600 came along and I thought I was heaven till I got a USR DST 14,4 oh
boy we were hot then! <grin>
anyhow enough babbling you are correct, it is hard to put any emotions in a written message.
there are things we are all going to do to upset someone at sometime even if we do not mean it, usually if I get ticked with someone I will write them personally and let them know it, I've only had one argument (heck not even a argument really) with one person on this board that was not an admin, heck I never really even had a argument with a admin member. that person I had a time with and I got it taken care of through PM. between us. Yes I poked him a little too hard. when I realized I was actually going to get ticked about it him and I stopped it before it got carried away.
Things that tick me off,
Two faced (I know it sound like a strong word) but it pisses me off, I hate that, it's like like being little kids,l Do you really think I give a shit who "anyone" likes or don't like and why? I'm going to decide for myself who I think is decent or not, and I'm not out to judge anyone.
People putting other folks stuff out for everyone to read and see, sheesh grow up already right.
Someone that can't take an apology, ok we are all adults correct?
My goodness folks it's usenet, not every one is going to like everyone all the time, deal with it.
I could care less who is on the top ten of most "complained" people on this board, and it's really no one elses business either.

Wow. Interesting thread.
For the record I think the rating system is stupid. This is the internet - I take *everything* I read/see on the internet with a grain of salt. True, most of the folks here at bmwlt.com are good folk and I have learned an awful lot about the LT here. But I'm also not a lemming. I'm not going to read something here and then blindly go do it without performing some due diligence.
Funny, I would never in a million years have been able to tell you who were the "bad" users here. Or the ones that spout off too much. Or the ones that are somehow less regarded than the others. Oh oh, maybe I'm on that list? (heh heh - while disappointing in the grand scheme of things it wouldn't make much difference to me...) I read the threads that seem interesting and pass by those that don't. I'll even stop reading halfway through a thread if it starts sounding stupid. I don't believe I've ever taken the time to say, "hmmm... fred there sure said something stupid - I'm gonna ignore everything from fred from now on."
Purely as in interesting exercise in "what the hell would you do then," what are the mods gonna do when some guy who is ranked as the biggest loser on the board and receives tons of anon "go fuck yourself" email and decides that he doesn't want to play anymore? And he's recently donated a few hundred bucks to support the site? What would we say if he said, "ah... I'll take my few hundred back please."
Also, without completely hijacking the thread, doesn't it seem that there are a lot less new posts/conversations on the new board? Vs. the old board?

Dan,
I stand corrected. We are now running more than double the number of posts per day than we did with the old system. A typical day on the old system would be between 150-175 posts per day. On Tuesday, we had 344, and Wednesday, we had 357. I've already deleted Monday's RSS Feed, so I can't tell you about Monday (which is normally our busiest day). Friday and Sunday are our slowest days (less than 200 posts per day).

On the old site, we normally had 800 members log in during a 24 hour period, 1200 during a week, and 2400 per month. We would normally have between 7-10 new members per day.
I attribute the increase in daily new members to the cross pollination between BMWLT.com and K-Bikes.com

On the old site, we normally had 800 members log in during a 24 hour period, 1200 during a week, and 2400 per month. We would normally have between 7-10 new members per day.
That's pretty good, so if ya'll go full pay subscription someone should make a good living, good luck with it! It's been a lot of work to get this far for ya'll
back to the amount of posts, I surely thought it was less than before myself, it must be because how everything is broken up in sub forum's now that makes it seem that way. I know I don;t jump between all the sub forums and surley am missing out on some good stuff because of that

Sort of like you getting involved in this thread, huh?
hey Jeff I forgot to ask you a serious question
you posted here
" and that you were wrong to get involved in that flame war in the first place." "Sort of like you getting involved in this thread, huh?"
What was I not supposed to get involved in this thread? heck I was involved in it before it turned into a he said she said between you and I, look at the posts? I was one that posted my opinion about the User reputation system. So?

After being entertained by negative reputation points a few times, [/img] Actually, I'm quite impressed with the use of profanity in an anonymous message.
I like my reputation now, someone changed it, it states "tmgs is an unknown quantity at this point" so what's that supposed to mean? and who put that there? (bet I can guess) I sure like to know who doesn't like me, I don't think to highly of anon posters, say it to me directly and let me knnow what I've done to upset you and maybe we can work it out, otherwise it's a moot point, kind of like the idiot/s that gets revenge on someone by sneaking up to thier bike/car/house at night and doing something to vandalize it, sits right in there with chicken in my humble opinion
Tom (who holds no hatred/dislike whatsoever to anyone here - in fact pretty much anyplace off the top of my head)

I'm never envious of anything. it just ain't in the cards for me <sfsf>
so how does the reputation thing work? I don't see anything for it anywhere. I guess the more points you have the worse you are? I assumed you could put whatever test in that box you wanted right?
do the admins know who adds comments to it?
does it really matter?
will it ever warm back up here in GA?
is the grass really greener on the other side?
<g>
will I ever find the right house for us? dang that is turned into a nightmare on elm street!

The dot is green when a person's online, kinda grey when they're off . . . red must be for the invisble ones? I dunno. Are you in invisible mode?

TomThe red dot by your username means you have chosen to be invisible in your user options. Everyone else sees it as gray, whether you are online or not.

I like the idea that we can reward those that contribute and tarnish those that troll or are in other ways detract from the board.
Aside from the color coding, which users can opt out of, are there any other effects of a persons reputation, is something being planned?

I don't think anything specific is being planned. I think it's just a feature built in to the new message board software that the admins decided to try out.
Of course if it represented reality, then you could just buy positive reputation points and be done with it. :)
